10-D Monday July 11. '77 DETROIT FREE PRESS Tigers End Losing Skid by Nipping Chisox in 10th, 6-5 Continued from First Sports of the ninth, and wrestling with the White Sox In the top of the 10th, the Tigers finally ended their losing ways. Tom Veryzer singled to begin the Tigers' half of the 10th, and Ron LeFlore walked on four pitches, squaring away as if to bunt every time. Then the flashy Fuentes, who spends about one-third of his time in the batting cage practicing his bunting before every game, dropped a beauty down the third base line. Chicago reliever Dave Hamilton fielded the ball, but slipped and fell while doing so.

With no chance to catch Fuentes at first, he fired In desperation toward third, over Eric Soderholm's head and down into the Tigers' bullpen, allowing Veryzer to score sNy- "It was getting late," explained the smirking Tigers second baseman. "Benji (Ben Oglivie) had to go to a wedding." The fight, which was without a doubt the most important part of the game, next to the winning rally, occured when Wilcox accidently knocked Lemon do wn on the seat of his pants with a 1-2 pitch. May, thinking the ball might have knlcked Lemon's bat, appealed to plate umpire Jim Evans for a third strike. And Lemon, thinking Wilcox might have tried to hit him, appealed to Wilcox. THE TWO MEN TRADED words, May told Lemon if he was mad at Wilcox he knew where to find him, and when the Tiger catcher turned to walk away, Lemon announced he was coming after him.

He did, but May, with his mask and other catching paraphernalia still in place, wrestled him to the ground, and both benches emptied. However no additional punches were thrown and Lemon was quickly invited to leave the field. "He was upset because the pitch almost hit him," May was a tight game, we were in extra Innings, and they're in first place, going good. "Obviously we weren't trying to hit him with the potential winning run already on first base. I told him I didn't want to hear it.

I didn't want to talk to him. I thought the conversation was pointless, I never thought he'd press the point that much." Afterwards, Lemon was considerably more contrite than he had been on the field. "I don't like fighting, that's not my style," the Chicago centerfielder when you get knocked down, you're scared to death. Then, when somebody says something to vou. you want to fight." Wilcox, who took over for starter Bob Sykes in the fifth, held the hot-hitting White Sox to one run the rest of the way.

The last time the 27-year-old righthander beat anybody was In 1974 when he was wearing the uniform of the Cleveland Indians. Since then, he has pitched or Witchita, the Chicago tubs, and Evansville in the Tigers farm system, in his battle, to overcome a sore arm. Sunday, he had the help of 13 hits, while he and Sykes held the White Sox to a mere II. It was the first loss in 10 games for the Chisox, who collected 43 hits in their three game series against the Tigers. was breaking that way ana i Knew i a oe aoie to get mm out," lamented Hamilton.
