DETROIT FREE PRESSMONDAY. APRIL 24. 1978 gp Sg H-4I 5 4 tl Jig w3 fc4 by Jack Sayior yvix scouts tip the scales for U-M draft hopefuls These are nervous days in a certain apartment in Ann Arbor and isn't their final examination grades that have seniors Mark Donohue and Mike Kenn on pins and needles. They were star offensive linemen on the University of Michigan football team and, along with a couple of other Wolverines, are waiting for next week's NFL draft with the same anticipation kids have when they tip up that slow-pouring catsup bottle. "We're getting nervous we're anxious to see where we'll be, said Donohue about himself and his roomie Kenn.

"Both Mike and I have talked to scouts from a good majority of the teams. "They've come in and asked us to do a few agility tests. Some had us do 10 or 20-yard sprints, but mostly they came just to meet us in person and see how we look weigh us, see how tall we are." Pro scouts are inclined to look askance at program specs, which have a history of getting somewhat inflated. Not true in the case of Donohue, a two-time Ail-American guard, whom the U-M program billed as 6-foot-3 by 245 pounds. All the Wolverine prospects have different agents, but won't be around Ann Arbor come draft day next Tuesday.

The term is finishing at U-M and Donohue and Kenn will vacate their apartment and split to their homes in Illinois. So as not to be disappointed, the Wolverine group is not hoping to be picked by any certain team. "I don't know what I'd do if I got drafted by a team in a warm-weather climate, Donohue said. "I'm so used to this. Really, it doesn't matter.

I'd like to play for a couple of years at least and get a little security." The U-M stars are likely to enjoy a longer run than that. CARL YASTRZEMSKI has signed for another year (1979) with the Boston Red Sox by which time (A) he will be 40 years old; and (B) he hopes he will have accumulated 3,000 hits. Yaz is currently playing his 18th season after taking over left field for Ted Williams in 1961. He batted .296 last year and currently has 2,737 hits, ranking 32d on the all-time list, one dozen behind Luke Appling. The contract was actually signed during spring training.

"It was no secret," said Red Sox GM Haywood Sullivan. "We just didn't make a big thing of it." FLY FLY SOLLY could be a bantamweight champion from Thailand, a Sumo wrestler from Sumatra or a second baseman for the Yokimura Giants. Turns out it's none of these, but a pacer owned by Frank Rossi Jr. and Joseph Faso of Glenwood, 111. What did he do? Well, Fly Fly flew the fastest mile over a half-mile track this season in winning the $50,000 Maywood Pacing Derby at Maywood Park in Chicago.

Driven by Jim Dolbee, Solly covered the distance in 1:58 4-5. Nor were his backers solly, er, sorry. Fly Fly returned a handsome $61.20 to win. JACK CHRISTIANSEN who gained everlasting fame here as the leader of "Chris Crew" the Lions' brilliant defensive backf ield of the 50s has a new job. A former head coach at both Stanford and the San Francisco 49ers, Chris has been named defensive backfield coach of the Seattle Sea-hawks.

He coached the offensive backs at Kansas City last season. Christiansen replaces Bob Hollway, ex-St. Louis head' coach and also a former assistant at Michigan and the Lions, who resigned. continued to play until last week while he was on the mound for the San Diego Padres. His loss is a severe blow to the Padres, since The Mick sports a 1-0 record and a 1.13 earned run average.

Incidentally, a strict diet was ordered for the portly 37-year-old southpaw. BILL WALTON broke the tarsal navicular bone below his left ankle, but he didn't break the playoff spirit of his Portland Trail Blazers' teammates, if their attitude following the news of their star's demise is any indication. "The attitude was positive," said coach Jack Ramsay. "They showed a 'let's do it anyway' attitude." Few outside Portland will give the Blazers much chance without their big center, however. "Obviously, our team is at its best when Bill is playing," Ramsay agreed.

"But in the last two games he wasn't able to play his best. At least I think we'll play better because we know what Tom Owens can do it eliminates the uncertainty." Said Owens: "This doesn't mean we're dead. We'll have to play some excellent basketball, but we can do that. We just have to keep together." Owens' hopes are one thing, but the Sonics had something else in mind Sunday as they exploded in the second half to dump the Blazers, 99-84. SPENCER HAYWOOD plays on an NBA playoff loser and he is miffed.

As a matter of fact, so is George McGinnis and he is with the winning side. Haywood, the former Pershing High and U-D star now with the New York Knicks, figures he'll be traded before another season. "I don't expect to be here, next year. Willis (Reed) changed his mind about me. I played in spots and it affected my rhythm.

There's been a lot of negativism and I think it's within Willis. He has to search himself out." In the locker room of the winning Philadelphia 76ers, McGinnis was directing his unhappiness at coach Billy Cunningham and saying: "I'm a yo-yo. I'm in the lineup one minute and out the next. If I gotta be in that system, I don't want to play here. You want to leave a guy in there.

We won 55 games during the regular season and it didn't happen then." McGinnis also claimed about problems with his rhythm. Maybe he and Spencer shuld get together they could bill themselves as "The Rhythm Boys." Mark Donohue Mickey Lollch Bill Walton Yastrzemskl strict diet break secret JOE STATUTOhas one of the best jobs In the world providing you're a hockey fan, which he is. "Windy" is the tender of the visiting team's penalty box at Boston Garden and he has been opening the gates, handing towels and drinks to angry opponents of the Bruins for 30 years. Hasn't been hit yet except by an errant shot (27 stitches). "I'm lucky to be doing it," Statuto said.

"I know all the players and see all the games. I don't get paid, but it doesn't matter." The 62-year-old hockey nut is a veratible Henry Kissinger in associating with the freshly penalized players. "I don't say anything to them unless they talk to me," he said. "Usually they're not in a talkative mood when they get here. But none of them has been mad at me.

They're all my favorites. They all treat me well." At 62, Statuto may bow out soon. "But I'd like to hang in for three more years, then take the memories with me." MICKEY LOLICH had his knee surgery Sunday 23 minutes worth which will put him out of baseball for at least six weeks. The surgery, performed by Dr. Paul Bauer in San Diego, was for a torn ligament in his right knee and was termed a success.

The ex-Tiger pitching star hurt his knee in 1974, but "I'm still 6-3," Donohue laughed, "but I weigh about 260 now hopefully it's all muscle. Weight lifting built me up a little. Mike gained quite a bit of weight, too." The 6-foot-7 Kenn, a tackle, played last fall at 245. "He's up to 257 I'm short and squatty, he's tall and skinny," Donohue chuckled. John Anderson and Walt Downing are other Michigan players likely to go high in the draft.

Anderson is a 6-foot-3, 214-pound linebacker who can run (and also punt) while Downing is a 6-foot-4, 255-pound center whom the Lions might well show interest in with the veteran Jon Morris getting along in football years. "We talk with the other guys about the draft. We're all curious to see who we get picked by," Donohue said. "We'll be glad to get it over with, all this waiting." for the record 5Tr NO MATTER WHERE YOU GO, YOU CAN ENJOY IT MORE WITH AN HFC VACATION LOAN.
