DETROIT FREE FRESS Wednesday. Mar. 1. '78 7-D A orget Van JanoiVi 5 hi le a Ml ergs hfs leading trainer at hazel park At the start of the 1977 meet, Morry went through several jockeys in short order. Cuban refugee Jonas Garrido won three races for him on opening day plus more later, but Janowitz dumped him and a few others before he lured champion rider Wayne Catalano away from the Van Berg stable.

This year he plans to use a new rider from Florida. Morry doesn't like to lose and he doesn't want excuses. He expects only the best when his horses start running again at Hazel Park next Friday. And who's to say he won't get it? On the race track, class and money usually talk. Sears blinked.

As director of racing he has passed out many a "cooler" but nothing like this. Usually the track presents $50 blankets only to winners of its big stakes races. Janowitz won a couple of those last season. He even got a handsome sterling trophy of a charging horse, but that wasn't enough to satisfy his pride. So he went out and bought his own blanket to proclaim his achievement to the world every time one of his horses goes to the paddock.

He isn't an easy man to satisfy either, as many a jockey will testify, but he is satisfied with his success on the race track so far. Windsor Raceway Tonighl BEST BET Big Wave (10th race) POST TIME 7:45 P.M. BY AL COFFMAN Free Press Racing Writer People laughed when the name of Morry Janowitz first appeared at the top of the trainers' standings at the Hazel Park Race Course a year ago. "No way is he going to beat out Jack Van Berg!" they said, but Morry Jay proved them wrong. Van Berg, who set a world record by saddling 505 winners in 1976, turned over his powerful stable to right-hand man Ben Cibo-ron, but Ciboron never got ahead of Janowitz.

Before the 104-day meeting was over, some of Morry Jay's friends were calling him "the Jewish Van Berg" much to Janowitz's embarrassment. "I'll never know as much as Jack about race it again. Some even say Janowitz should stick to building swimming pools. "Let 'em talk!" said Morry upon his arrival from Hialeah Park in Florida. "It shows right there in the record book that I won 5 1 races last year." "Yeah, and you won only one race at the Detroit Race Course after that," shot back a cynic.

"I won when the big money was down," replied Janowitz. "Sure, I ran my horses hard, but they got the job done. They needed a rest by the time they got to the DRC." Maybe it was a fluke that Morry', who has been around the track only four years, beat out all those veteran horsemen, but he got to the top by putting out a heap of money to assemble a strong stable. He claimed nearly $250,000 worth of horses in Florida last winter so many horses, in fact, that he had trouble getting stalls again this season. After all, no track likes to see some outlander show up and go away with as many good runners as Janowitz did.

MORRY PLEADED and wheedled, and he got a few influential friends to go to bat for him, so he got back into Hialeah. When Hialeah closes later this week, the Detroiter will have another batch of Florida horses ready to run for him at Hazel Park. "He must have spent another quarter of a million," says Bud Sears, Hazel Park director of racing, smiling at the thought of Morry Jay's daring maneuvers in Florida this winter. At that moment, Harold Gross, who supplies local horsemen with medicine, boots and other items, waltzed into the room with a big bundle under his arm. Slowly he pulled it out of a plastic cover and stretched it across a couch.

"Take a look at this!" he said. "Janowitz ordered it. It's going to cost him $100, but he didn't care when I told him the price." The object was a beautiful blue horse blanket with the words "Hazel Park's Leading Trainer 1 977" emblazoned on it in big white letters. horses," he said. "After all, he grew up with them." But, in his own way, Morry Jay made a lot of fans forget about Jack Van Berg and his late great father, M.H.

Previously Sabatino had been associated with the Emprise Corp. of Buffalo for close to 30 years. Among his duties for that farflung sports concessionaire he had handled labor negotiations, managed several race tracks and operated the Cincinnati Gardens when Emprise owned the Cincinnati Royals of the National Basketball Association. DURING HIS short stay at Hazel Park, Sabatino found himself in the midst of a controversy between horsemen and association officials on preparations for the forthcoming meet. Because the grounds were in no shape for the thoroughbred meet to open on schedule last Friday, the Easterner caught a lot of flak.

Hartman explained that Sabatino had a health problem, 'which led him to return home Carmen Sabatino, newly appointed general manager of the Hazel Park Racing Association, never even made it to the starting gate. Only 72 hours before the scheduled start of the track's 116-day thoroughbred meet, the veteran race-track executive from Buffalo turned in his resignation to vice-president Bernard Hartman. He cited poor health as the reason for giving up the post which he accepted barely two months ago. With officials rushing to get things ready for Friday's opening, Hartman announced the appointment of Michael Collins, a 38-year-old Detroiter, to succeed Sabatino. Collins, who has served in a variety of parimutucl department jobs since coming to Hazel Park in 1960, most recently was in charge of the money room.
