The world of Billy Foes took a distinct turn for the better, however, a couple of years ago when some representatives of HANAC, basically a Greek-denominated organization, asked the former pitcher to lend a hand in their program to better the lives of some of New York City's less privileged citizens. 12 NOON TO P.M. NEW YORK (UPI) -Brooklyn, the 1950s. It was a time for baseball, tht World Series and above all, the Dodgers those lovable, raucous Bums of Ebbets Field and Flarbush. The only man in World Series history ever to lose a ground ball in the sun. "Never win 20," he was supposed to have said, "because then they'll expect you to do it every year." FOR BILLY Loes, the onetime bonus righthander who won one World Series game and 50 others during the regular seasons for the Dodgers from 1952 through '56 before being shuttled off to Baltimore, the end of the baseball line came in 1961.

And after coming back home to Astoria, Queens, it might as well have been the end of everything else, too. "I was floatin' from job to job," said Billy, while leading a reporter through his office at the Hellenic American Neighborhood Action Committee (IIANAC). A bramowicz Eyes Record BY ,1 SAYl.OR Fire Press Sports Writer Football records arc inclined to be a trifle less dramatic than those of other sports.

Wilt Chamberlain's prodigious scoring feats, Hank Aaron's home runs, Ni klaus' victories or (iordie Howe's longevity are such common knowledge they don't even rank as good tavern trivia. But except for a fresh figure like O.J Simpson's 2,003 yards in a season, football records are basically those of endurance Jim Olio's consecutive games (more than 200), Johnny Unilas' touchdown passes (29(1), Jimmy Brown's 12,312 yards or George Blanda's 1,842 points. They do not pop readily to mind. ONE, HOWEVER, THREATENS to become a classic mark, unless the I ions can put a stop lo it Monday night at Tiger Stadium. Dan Abramowicz, the San Francisco 49ers' wide re-reiver, has caught at least one pass in his last 95 games.

He started the siring midway through the 1967 season after coming into the NFL with the Now Orleans Saints as a 17fh-round draft choice from Xavier. He is not particularly big and he compensates for this by being slow. All has done is catch the ball. Abramowicz currently is tied at 95 consecutive games with the Green Ray Packer Hall of amer Don Hulson and his 96th catch if he gets it will tie him for the NFL record held by Lance Alworth, who built some of the mark in the pass-happy early days of the AI L. Lem Barney, and perhaps Charlie West, will have the primary function of checking Abramowicz, who has barely kept the string alive this season with merely four catches one in each game.

"I'm not happy about it," he said. "The record wasn't set that way and 1 didn't get this far with a string of singles." THE REASONS FOR DANDY Danny's holding on by a thread are two-fold. With regular miarterback Steve Spurrier injured, the 49ers' passing attack ranks 13th and last in the National Conference. Abramowicz sometimes alternates with Terry Beasley carrying in plays from coach Dick Nolan, which shaves his playing time. Now he shoots for a tic for the record Monday, working with a rookie quarterback Dennis Morrison, making his maiden NFL start.

"I'm very concerned about breaking the record," said Abramowicz. playing his second season as a 49er. "This thing goes back eight years and I'm very proud of the streak. But it brings a lot of pressure each game. "I try not to think about it, but I can't." Abramowicz' production in San Francisco dropped sharply from the days when he was perhaps the Saints' only rhreat.

Moving to Baghdad by the Bay, he found Gene Washington patrolling the other wing who was a much-favored receiver by quarterbacks Spurrier and John Brodie. Danny's best game, curiously, was I ho first one in the l.i game streak when he grabbed 12 passes in a game at New Orleans. He has a career total of 348 catches for 5,365 yards and 15 yards a catch. None of these figures will ever make a trivia game, i Maybe 96 straight will. LIGHT-DUTY ALUM.
