Then there was Pioneer's Pioneer Challenger, a former T-3. Some time in the first half of next month we'll see the Hilda Marjanne, a former T-2, slated to leave Germany Monday for arrival at Port Weller Aug. 5. Due in Monday at Detroit Harbor Terminals is the mv Lake Ontario on her maiden voyage.

She's operated by A. B. Atlanttrafik, a Swedish company, between the Great Lakes and Australia. Atlanttrafik brought one boat into the lakes last year, but this season are operating one a month to Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne. Regarding our recent inquiry about the Harvey D.

That has been a good trade this year, so good that the foreign scrapyards are even getting our old steamboats. Latest to go from Detroit was the former Browning boat John C. Hay, renamed a while back from the old Peter White, of the Cleveland Cliffs fleet. Marine Salvage at Port Colbbrne bought her as agents for an Italian scrapper and she will dismantled overseas. But at the same time we're getting some new big ones.

For instance, there's the Leon Falk, christened Thursday in Cleveland. She's owned by National Steel, op erated by M. A. Hanna. The Falk was christened by Mrs.

Falk, wife of a Nati a 1 Steel director. The Falk Is one of those new conversion Haseltine bow and stern off the T-2 tanker Winter Hill joined to a German-built midbody in the Baltimore yard of Bethlehem Ship Building. She measures 730 feet long with a 75-foot beam and can carry 21.200 long tons of ore at more than 16 miles an hour. She picked up a load of iron ore at Seven Islands on her way into the lakes from Baltimore and also made one Itrip to Superior before stop-ping off at Cleveland long enough to be christened. These tanker conversions "are coming thick and fast.

These, too. were de-i signed and built especially forj Kyder customers like Farm Crest. Ryder Services Bakery Fleet Yuri Glad Grissom 'Escaped' MOSCOW (UPI) Soviet cosmonaut Major Yuri Gagarin's reaction to the narrow escape of American astronaut Virgil Grissom from his sinking space capsule was, "It's good this brave American flyer remained alive," the newspaper Piavda reported Sunday. Interviewed by a Pravda correspondent while returning from Warsaw to Moscow, Ga garin was also quoted as saying Grissom "actually repeated the flight of his comrade Alan Shepard." THE SOVIET press and radio continued to hammer on the theme that Grissom's spacecraft was lost although Grissom managed to swim away before it sank in the Atlantic.

Newspapers quoted American press reports of the lefts. They also played up British press comment that the mishap set back the American space program. W. Grand Blvd. or Phone TR 4-1137 Clare, George N.

Baker, of the steamer J. H. Thompson, came through with her identification as Columbia's J. Clare Miller. The further inquiry as to the identity of Goulder who had a freighter and a tugboat named ia his honor brought quick answers.

W. N. Stevens, of 1375 E. Grand rushed us a letter telling that Goulder was for 20 years or more the leading admiralty lawyer on the Great Lakes and a shining light of the Lake Carriers' Association. He was head of the law firm of Goulder, Holding Masten, of Cleveland.

Capt. Frank Becker post-carded that Goulder's law firm is now the Lee Hinslea office in Cleveland. Now we know. Oscar G. Kreer, of 18068 Dwyer, writes to ask about the E.

B. Osier. He helped build her at the Canadian Shipbuilding Co. at Bridgeburn, and used to see her in the Detroit River occasionally but not for some years now. He was a fitter's helper and worked for $1.50 a day back in 1907-08 when the Osier was built.

Kreer can still see his handiwork. She is now the R. O. a of Canada Steamship Lines. The original name was shortened to plain Osier in 1926 and she became the Petman in 1954.

He might not recognize her, though, because in 1941 she was converted to a self-un-loader with a 200-foot boom. Bill Luke, associate editor of the Detroit Marine Historian, adds an interesting footnoteliterally to the Osier story. Osier, he reports, was a widely-acclaimed Canadian doctor who believed all human ills originated in the feet and could be cured by proper foot massage and manipulation. Mrs. F.

E. Wilson, of Am-herstburg, reports that as a result of an item here. Republic Steel's Charles M.
