CROSBY Inch topping, more or less, of shredded sphagnum moss or a topping of light, fluffy, granular vermiculite Gardeners should purchase a horticultural grade of ver-miculite, since there is another grade which is used for insulation in house construction.

Both of the above commodities are practically sterile materials for seed starting, possess great water-holding capacity and allow adequate drainage. SPHAGNUM moss helps prevent the seedling disease known as Where wooden flats are used for seed starting, it is a good idea to cover the cracks in the bottom with a light layer of sphagnum to hold in the soil while maintaining adequate drainage. Soil for starting seeds should be neither too dry nor too wet, but moist enough so a compressed handful will crumble finely when released. Beginning gardenen should avoid unduly deep planting of seeds. SEEDS SHOULD be covered, only enough to assure constant intimate contact of the entire surface with moist cover under good conditions of drainage.

Fine seeds may be merely pressed into the moist soil or sphagnum, watered very gently and covered by a piece of glass placed over the container to retain moisture. Be sure to raise the glass or remove It entirely as germination occurs. Otherwise, soil-grown seedlings will become subject to damping off. Most kinds of flower and vegetable seeds germinate very well an I seedlings thrive under similar temperature conditions 65 to "3 degrees that prevail in most, household during night and day. To avoid loues from damplng-off, water soli-grown seedlings only on sonny days, early enough to enable excess moisture to evaporate before nightfall.

If crowded seedlings are to be pricked off and set at wider spacing for sturdier growth, this should be done as soon as possible. The smaller the seedling, the less shock and setback it will cuffer. ASTRONAUTICS 15700 HAMILTON at GI.FNDALE IAve. Notice of time later. CHAPMAN TO 8 0900 EST.
