FrM Press Business Writer The whole character of the Stock Market has changed considerably in 30 years and stock brokering the buying and selling of stocks for the public with it.

Today brokerages are far more than a stock ticker, a telephone and three clerks struggling to keep customer accounts up to date. They are big businesses with complicated teletype systems and computers handling thousands of transactions a day. "In the five-million-share days of the Great Bull Market of the Twenties, our armies of clerks fell three to four weeks behind in their bookkeeping, even though they worked around the clock," Detroit brokers recall. "Today, threvmIllion-share days are commonplace and we have the day's accounts billed and balanced with little overtime." Even at present levels, Detroit brokerage houses have a way to go for complete automation but electronics and advanced accounting system are carrying them forward rapidly. No customer, as frequently happened in the Twenties, suffers loss because an order hasn't been executed; today confirmations of buys and sells are mailed to customers only hours after the trading.

Efficient teletype circuits transmit orders almost instantly and they are executed on exchanges within a few minutes. AMONG Detroit brokerages, Watling, Ler-chen Co. is leading the electronic parade. It is the first to put its accounting department under a complete IBM system. Chas.

Brokerage houses, In Detroit as elsewhere, trade millions of dollars worth of securities a year. Many underwrite new issues and trade in bonds and commodities for customers. But their bread and butter is commissions and interest on customers' margin accounts. An average local house has 5,000 to 20,000 accounts. The modern secret of success is immediate and complete processing of transactions.

I used to "clam up" when the talk turned to politics or economics. All I could talk about was sports. Then I started reading The Wall Street Journal.

It gare me an understanding of what goes on in the world. I learned about the changes taking place in America new inventions, new industries, new ways to ear money. In conversations with other men I found I could interpret business and government trends a little better than they could. They wondered where I got my "inside dope." As a result, I gained confidence in talking with people. My boss gave me more important assignments.

And my income increased. Last year I earned $14,000. This story is typical. If you think The Wall Street Journal Is just for millionaires, you are wrong. The Journal helps salaried men making $7,500 to $25,000 a year.

It is valuable to small business men. It can be of enormous benefit to the ambitious young man who wants to win advancement. The Wall Street Journal is the complete business DAILY. The petroleum institute emphasizes that the first warm weather can bring rapid changes in your crankcase oil. In cold weather, the oil becomes contaminated with unburned gasoline and water from condensation.

As these liquids evaporate In warmer weather, the Institute says, the crank-case oil level drops. This concentrates sludge and other contaminants, which are then circulated through the engine, doing more than usual damage. This also may hasten acid formation and, when evaporated, the acid salts can corrode metal surfaces. The institute, of course, recommends an oil change to get rid of winter's accumulation of engine debris and a change every 60 days (not more than 2,000 miles) in warm weather.
