Eecause of a record enrollment of more than 4,000 beginning skiers, the school had to be enlarged and extended this year. It is just about the same story in 6ki areas all over the state.

More areas are opening up as the number of ski enthusiasts continues to swell. PRESEASON estimates by the Michigan Tourist Council indicated that some 165,000 skiers will make an average of three trips each to Michigan's ski centers if the snow condi tions are as good as last year, Sine 1953, when 38 Tenters catered to about skiers, the number of sites has nearly doubled. The 74 areas, dotting the Michigan map from the far reaches of the Upper Peninsula to the fringes of metropolitan Detroit, offer a variety of slopes for beginners as well as experts and intermediates.

SXOW MACHINES are in operation at 12 centers, assuring- a longer season with more reliable conditions. Night skiing is offered at 32 areas. In addition to downhill hiding, the resorts offer toboggan run, fckatLng rinks. Ire fishing, ice boating, hunting, slalom bowls and cross-country trails. Indoor facilities at many centers feature lodge, dormitory and motel accommodations, restaurants, snack bars, lounges and warming shelters.

While the facilities have been developing and changing, so have the skiers themselves. In 1953 most of those 65,000 enthusiasts fol- lowed skiing as an individual hobby. i Now the sport has become a family project. Mom, Dad and the kids frequently spend their vacation at one of the northern areas. ALTHOUGH the majority of the skiers U11 falls into the 20-40 category, you'll spot beginners from six to 66 balancing precariously on the slopes.

Another facet of the sport Is the ski club. They are springing up all over the state, and last November more than 10,000 such skiers registered at the Metropolitan I) i 1 1 Ski Council's annual convention at Co bo Hall. So while 'Americans have been labeled a nation of "watchers" rather than "doers." the evidence points up ust the reverse. i St-SILVE VALLEY: miles northwef ot Tawas on Monument in Huron Nation Forest. 5 slooes, 3 tows, 2 toboggan runs.
