That's the weakest won-lost record for any pennant winner in National League history." Me? I'm not buying such guff. You can't compare the Sox with baseball's greatest teams.

Nor the Dodgers. A look over the shoulder at Yankee teams in the Babe Ruth era, the Athletics of Cochrane, Grove, Earnshaw and Foxx, the Cardinals of the Gas House gang days and others leaves both the current Series' teams on the short side. But history isn't all in the deep past. A champion i3 a team that beats back its opposition in one season to win a title. That the Sox did it with steady pitching from Early Wynn and Bob Shaw, plus help from Dick Donovan and Billy Pierce, and without the services of a murderers' row of home-run sluggers, is their glory not a detraction.

They did it with defense, speed, and a hang-in-there spirit to brand as false the accepted belief that in this day of a lively baseball only a team that can knock the ball out of the park can be a winner. Dodgers: Seventh to First DODGERS do have home-run power. Their defense is not in Chicago's class. The pitching is on a par. They trail in speed.

They were a seventh-place finisher just a year ago. But to win this time, they not only had to climb over the other also-rans of 1958 but were forced to go into their playoff with the team that not only had won two straight NX flags but had knocked off the Yankees in the 1957 Series. Their badge greatness is worn with the knowledge that they not only made the greatest advance in one season (from seventh to first) but beat the defending champs in the quickest possible time. is why this Series which opens in a city that hasn't seen the Sox in one since 1919 and then moves to another which never has seen one should be one of the greatest. decade from now, I may change my opinion.

But the makings are here for a Series of superlatives even in dollar signs. What more can anybody ask? OPEN SUN. TO'l Deorborn 13039 Michigan Schlfl'f and Miller Rol LU 1-3850 BY JACK BERRY Pre Press Staff Writer YPSTLANTI Wayne State is looked to as the Mount Everest of athletic purity. But Eastern Michigan makes the Tartars look like a broken-down Pike's Peak in comparison. Eastern's football budget is $15,300.

One school in Michigan, much smaller, has allocated for football and it'3 an also-ran in its league. THERE IS no such animal as an athletic scholarship at Eastern. There is a grant-in-aid for all students based solely on need and academic promise and the student must have a 2.3 average (better than a to qualify. At Wayne there is tuition aid for. those engaged in activities such as athletics, band and the college paper, but it also is based on need although it requires only a straight average academically.

There is no such thing as specific campus jobs for Huron athletes to help them through school as there are on most campuses. Strange as it may seem, Eastern Michigan coaches can't even use university stationary or stamps to write to prospective athletes. If a boy writes, asking for information, it's permissible to use EMU stationary to answer. BUT A COACH can't send a batch of letters to prep standouts asking them to come to EMU unless he uses his own paper and stamps. Recruiting is banned by the school.

Despite the overwhelming restrictions on athletics in comparison to other schools and leagues even the Presidents Athletic Conference and the MIAA Eastern has done surprising well in its conference, the Interstate Intercollegiate Athletic. Conference, with mediocre talent. A large share of the success is due to -the EMU coaching staff and desire. As a teachers college, it would be expected that Eastern graduates spread around the state's school systems would try tovchannel their better players back to their alma mater. BUT IT isn't so, claim the EMU coaches.

The grads realize it would be tough to talk a boy into going to Eastern where there are no athletic scholarships if he could get one at any other school in the state. William Lawrence, vice president for student affairs, explained the EMU philosophy this way: "We think our philosophy is sound although not too many may agree with it. We feel athletics here are for students with students the participants. We don't think it's our job to go out and hire a troop of athletes to entertain our students. "We want to win as much as anyone else.

We like unbeaten seasons as much as anyone else. Continued from First Sports hitters like Al Rosen. Vic Wertz, Larry Doby, Al Smith and Bobby Avila. Our White Soy won because of speed, spectacular defense, good pitching, clutch and that "nice guy" who kept everybody happy. This is Al's kind of team.

He believes speed and defense are basic. "A boy first would have to show me he could run and throw if I were a scout," he once told me. OF COURSE, 1 11 be thankful for any home runs our side hits. Our pitchers consider this a bonus. We're used to sweating it out with our offense one run at a time, gratefully accepting all passed balls, wild pitches and errors.

Our fans came to expect these one-run cliff-hangers and I wouldn't be surprised if the next statistics show a big increase in ulcer cases on Chicago's South Side. We thought we won it the hard way, but the Dodgers, in the playoff, showed there was an even harder way.
