Wally Jones, Steve Bryant and Dave Young caught the scoring passes. Young's reception covered 31 yards while the other two were four-yard plays. Herrmann completed only two of his first twelve passes before he began picking Miami's defense apart with short passes. The victory evened Purdue's record at 2-2 while Miami fell to 1-3. The Bulldogs played a nearly error-free game, and turned two Illinois fumbles, one Interception and a blocked punt into their four touchdowns. Illinois (2-2-1 moved the ball well, especially with the passing of quarterback Dave Wilson, but turnovers and dropped passes took a heavy toll. Wilson tossed two fourth quarter touchdowns, one to Mitchell Brookins and one to Mike Martin, but it was not enough to overcome Mississippi State's 21-point lead.

The Bulldogs' scoring came despite the loss of key runner Mardye McDole with a rib injury early in the game. The 'crowd of 60,899 was the largest in Memorial Stadium since the Ohio State game in 1977. Arizona 5, Iowa 3: Brett Weber kicked a 37-yard field goal and Reggie Ware blocked a punt that for a safety, to win the nonconference affair at Iowa City. Iowa drove from its own five yard line to the Arizona 28 late in the game on the passing of quarterback Phil Suess, but Reggie Roby missed a 48-yard field goal attempt with 2:28 remaining. Arizona ran out the clock after Roby's miss and sent its record to 2-1.

Iowa, which lost for the third straight time and has scored only one touchdown in the last 12 quarters, fell to 1-3. Purdue 28, Miami 3: Senior quarterback Mark Herrmann completed 21 of 39 passes for 291 yards and three touchdowns to supply the AP and UPI EVANSTON, 111. Marion Barber blasted for three touchdowns and Garry White scored on runs of 78 and 25 yards Saturday to lead Minnesota to a 49-21 victory over Northwestern. Although the Gophers coughed up the ball four times on fumbles in the first half, they still managed a whopping 42-0 lead at halftime to spoil Northwestern's home debut before a disappointed crowd of 17,747. The victory was the second in four starts for the Gophers and left them with a 1-1 record in the Big Ten.

Northwestern, suffering its 14th successive loss over a two-season span, is 0-5 for the season and 0-3 in the conference. Barber, from Detroit Chadsey, scored on runs of five, two and 14 yards and gained 118 yards In 12 carries. White had 129 yards in eight carries. Both left the game midway in the second quarter and did not return. Northwestern took the second half kickoff and marched 80 yards in nine plays for Its first touchdown.

Wildcat quarterback Mike Kerrigan hit Dave Mishler with a seven-yard scoring pass. Kerrigan also completed a 49-yard pass to Todd Jenkins in the drive and Jeff Cohn set up the touchdown with a 23-yard run. The next time the Wildcats gained possession, Kerrigan kit Randal Sconyers with a 47-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 42-14. But Minnesota came right back with a 74-yard drive, Duane Gregory scoring from the two. Kerrigan complete the scoring with a five-yard touchdown pass to Jenkins with 58 seconds left in the game.

y't terback Brad Wright scored three touchdowns and New Mexico's gambling defense shut down Wyoming's rushing game Saturday, leading the Lobos to a 24-21 Western Athletic Conference victory that spoiled the Cowboys' homecoming. Running back Jimmy Sayers supported Wright by gaining 196 yards on 31 attempts. The win gave New Mexico a 3-2 record, including 2-0 in the WAC. Wyoming lost its first game, dropping to 3-1 and 1-1 in the WAC. The Cowboys, who were ranked third in the nation in rushing going into the game with 387 yards per game, were held to 133 rushing yards by the Lobos, while New Mexico was piling up 293 on the ground.

With Morris on the bench, the Orangemen could not score until the final period when quarterback Dave Warner ran over from the two. Smith completed 12 of his 14 passes for 166 yards, including scoring passes to wide receiver Verser on plays covering five and 66 yards. Clemson cooks Gobblers on FG AP and UPI CLEMSON, S.C. A third-quarter field goal by Obed Ariri gave Clemson the edge it needed for a 13-10 victory over previously unbeaten Virginia Tech Saturday before a homecoming crowd of 62,000.

Clemson (3-1) maintained its winning margin in the fourth quarter by stopping Virginia Tech three times inside their 10-yard line. The Gobblers (4-1) passed up a possible game-tying field goal with 2:21 remaining and were stopped at the eight by an incomplete pass. Wake Forest 27, William Mary 7: Wake Forest broke loose early in the second half to crush the underdog Indians in Williamsburg, Va. West Virginia 45, Virginia 21: Junior quarter-' back Oliver Luck threw for two quarterback Oliver Luck threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third in the third quarter as West Virginia took advantage of six second-half Virginia turnovers in a game played in Morgantown, W. Va.

Southern Mississippi 28, Mississippi 22: Tailback Sammy Winder scored three touchdowns and the unbeaten Golden Eagles whipped their intra-state rivals in Jackson. Auburn 55, Richmond 16: Senior tailback James Brooks raced for 204 yards and two touchdowns to fire the home team's rout. Richmond (2-3) hung close at first. Yale 17, Air Force 16: The game's deciding play came with 46 seconds left r. in the third quarter, when the visiting Falcons came up short on a two-point I conversion after a touchdown.

Olaf (Minn.) 30, Michigan Tech 20: Fullback Dan Kyllo and halfback Bob Kief saas combined for 271 yards rushing and scored a touchdown apiece as the visiting Oles raced to a 23-12 halftime lead and never looked back. The Huskies, now 1 -3-1 broke in front on the game's first series when Brian Getzelman smashed four yards for a touchdown on the 12th play of a 70-yard drive. But a field goal and a 68-yard TD option pass from Klefsaas to Steve McKay in the second quarter put St. Olaf in front to stay. McKay also scored on a 10-yard reception from Bill Mickelson.

Quarterback Mike Renner connected with Paul Ca-son on a 54-yard touchdown aeriai for the Huskies after the game had been decided. Saginaw Valley 21, Hillsdale 17: Quarterback Rusty Mandel, a freshman walk-on from Plymouth, tossed a 60-yard touchdown pass to Melvin Mathews' and scored on a 12-yard bootleg as the Cardinals rebounded from a 10-0 deficit to win on their home field. Mandel connected on 12 of 26 passes for 281 yards in all. He set up his game-winning TD in the final period with a 26-yard toss to Mathews and another 23-yard effort to Mike Rehm. Both Chargers' touchdowns came after fumble recoveries.

Kamal Cariuty, who was one for eight attempts going into the game, missed from 34 yards out, his second field goal failure of the day. It was just one of several missed opportunities for Grand Valley whose overall record slipped to 3-2. The Interceptions and fumbles there were six Laker turnovers kept the offense from scoring more than once, although they rolled up 413 total yards. "Our skilled players didn't quite get it done," said Harkema.

"You've got to execute. You've to play pitch-and-catch, that's all." Wayne totalled 204 yards on offense. "We're scrambling right now to get our offense to fit our personnel," said Wayne coach Steve Fickert, referring to several Tartar injuries. North wood 16, Ferris 6: Jim Dolmetsch tossed a 13-yard scoring pass to Mike Briskey and Jeff Conlin kicked a record-tying field goal in the second quarter as the Northmen eased to their second straight GLIAC decision. Conlin's boot, a 45-yard effort, was his fifth of the season, tying a single-season school mark.
