Petersburg lawas seriously injured Saturday when he was struck by a race car driven by Indy car racer Arie Luyendyk Luyendyk from The Netherlands was entering pit lane during a prac tice session when Springer apparent ly stepped in front of the speeding car five 15 times and the top 10 on 18 oc casions The Winston Classic starts at 12 noon with the 100 lap Late Model stock car race followed by the 200 lap Modified race and then the 200 lap Grand National event Springer who was taken by am bulance to Jackson Memorial Hospital was reported in stable condition with a compound fracture of the right leg an injury to his right forearm and possible internal inju ries Witnesses said Springer apparent ly did not see the car until the last moment and was tossed into the air tumbling back onto the car MIAMI (AP) Mario Andretti wrested the pole position for Sun season ending Nissan Indy Challenge away from his son Michael with a track record lap Saturday at Tamiami Park The elder Andretti raced around the 1784 mile nine turn circuit at an average speed of 114630 mph breaking one dav old mark of 114379 The younger Andretti won the provisional pole on riday with his father third at 113324 Saturday Michael improved to 114626 but lost the top starting posi tion by just two thousandths of a se cond think it feels said the elder Andretti with a laugh when asked how it felt to beat his son by such a narrow margin Michael said guess I should be used to dad beating me out for the pole It seems like happening all the ather and son now have earned side by side berths on the front row of a race seven times four of them this season with Mario holding the edge with four poles is a real good place to be starting from the Mario said track is hard to pass on and got to try to get a good The on lap 25 and Sullivan dogging rear wheels moved past the Brazilian to take third two laps later When ittipaldi pitted for his mandatory two tires and 5 gallons of fuel on lap 32 Rahal regained the lead But crew got him out of the pits in just 10 seconds allowing the two time ormula One champion to get back onto the 1784 mile nine turn Tamiami Park circuit ust ahead of Sullivan ittipaldi then went after the lead chopping deeply into lead until he trailed by just 24 seconds at the end of lap 40 A few drops of rain began falling but the hard racing continued until suddenly car slowed and on the final lap he stopped on the track apparently out of fuel Sullivan sped past to take second place finishing 8327 seconds behind March Boesel a substitute in the race for injured Roberto Guerrero of Colom bia finishing third ittipaldi wound up fourth Al Unser Jr the only other entry running at the end was fifth Sullivan earned $135000 for se cond while Boesel earned $90000 and ittipaldi $70000 No
