Houston was fifth and Geoff Bodine was sixth in the 40 car field Rounding out the top 10 were Bobby Hillin Ken Schrader Ellis and Dave Rezendes COLUMBIA (AP) A former University of South Carolina strength coach says he was told to keep football coach Joe Morrison posted about possible steriod use by some of the players a newspaper reported Saturday Keith Kephart now strength coach at Texas said he informed Morrison in 1985 that he had met with a group of South Carolina linemen after hearing the players were using the steroid Anadrol The State newspaper reported Kephart said he told Morrison of the meeting with the linemen later always informed Coach Mo when I held a meeting with any of the players he always wanted us to let him know when we met with Kephart said told him had an informal meeting in reference to steroids want that (steroid use) and Clemson managed to drive as far as the NC State 30 yard line in the final three minutes But Williams was sacked on a fourth down play to end the threat Montgomery who came into the game after second quarter field goal completed 12 of 22 passes for 116 yards Williams meanwhile suffered three intercep tions and completed only 4 of 23 passes that netted only 34 yards NC State is now 6 1 and 4 1 in the ACC while Clemson fell to 5 2 and 3 1 in the league The teams depended on one facet of their offense for their first half points a trend that continued in the second half Clemson had 117 yards in the first half all on the ground as Williams threw six incomplete passes NC State got the bulk of its 105 first half yards through the air The Wolfpack used two quarterbacks Preston Poag and Montgomery who combined for 100 yards Clemson took a 3 0 lead with 4:38 left in the first half on 35 yard field goal The Tigers took advantage of a 34 yard kick by Poag taking over on the Wolfpack 35 yard line Gardocki tried two 40 yard field goals in the second quarter but missed both NC State tied the score with 1:19 left on Damon 36 yard field goal Montgomery completed five passes in the 60 yard drive be fore the offensive stalled on the 14 yard line NC State finished the game with 185 yards of total offense compared to Clemson which had 215 around He told me to keep him posted He said if there was anything he needed to do to let him know But after that it come up The meeting between Kephart and the South Carolina linemen is related in a Sports Illustrated story by former South Carolina lineman Tommy Chaikin who said in the ar ticle that Gamecock coaches players and team doctors were aware of steroid use by Chaikin and others Chaikin also claims that Morrison learned Chaikin was using steroids but took no action telling him only to do it Morrison in a one paragraph statement released ednesday said there was any use of steroids it certainly was done without our knowledge have tried to educate and certainly have discouraged the use of any illegal type kids they were that follow my advice and could see it (steroid) would be detrimental to them He trusted me on that Kephart said of reac tion when told about possible steroid use was a little bit taken aback that it was brought up He know anything about steroids On the Woody (Myers) thing still naive about Myers the starting center in 1987 was banned from par ticipation in the Gator Bowl after an NCAA drug test revealed he had us ed steroids steroid use was not detected by an earlier test con ducted by USC Kephart also told WIS TV in a telephone interview riday that he suspected four players including Chaikin Myers and former lineman Deron arina of steroid use All three have admitted using steroids while at South Carolina something changes Change In ebruary wide receiver Ryan Bethea was charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine and simple possession of marijuana The charges were later dropped but the incident prompted university Presi dent James Holderman to appoint a task force to investigate the drug testing program A five member task fin dings were highly critical and led to the firing of Athletic Director Bob Marcum The task force said there had been no random drug tests since the spring of 1986 and that steroid results are not systematical ly followed up by retesting or refer ral to counseling services Holderman replaced Marcum with Dick Bestwick who was known as a man of integrity Bestwick helped to revamp the drug testing program and school officials insist the new is doing the job But just six months after Bestwick arrived he was gone Bestwick stepped down on Oct 3 citing unspecified health problems Several university board of trustee members have since said illness was related to stress on the job With Bestwick gone Holderman turned to Dixon 51 a star athlete at South Carolina in the late 1950s and a Phi Beta Kappa graduate Two weeks after he took over Dixon was in the middle of a controversy not of his making is days like Dixon said at his Wednesday news conference I say why did I ever leave Dixon said he was kidding but moments later he seem to be joking when he practically pleaded with the media begging reporters to us a chance to move not trying to cover up Dixon said cancel the rest of the football season We cancel our recruiting in There were times when Dixon seemed more concerned about the upcoming football game with North Carolina State on Oct 29 and the basketball recruiting than with the damaging allegations by Chaikin statement said Kephart said that during a 1985 workout of our linemen were while running because they were bloated by water reten tion He said that after the workout players came to me and said we think there may be a problem with this particular chem Kephart said that players told him they believed the to be Anadrol 50 He said he was familiar with Anadrol a waterbased steroid and that he was at the size of the dosage 50 milliliters called all the linemen in and told them want to know what using but cut it Kephart said offered them counseling and told them I could give them alternatives amino acids and vitamins We spent a ton on told him (Morrison) I thought it had been taken care of that I felt the COLUMBIA (AP) It has not been a very good week for the Uni versity of South Carolina rom the football team suffering its first loss to allegations of the use of steroids and other drugs the athletic department at the largest university is once more being rocked How quickly things change Only one week ago the athletic depart ment was flying high The football team was unbeaten and ranked eighth nationally Talk of bowls of the New Day variety was in the air But then the Gamecocks were em barrassed losing 34 0 to a Georgia Tech team that was 1 4 and had not beaten a I A team since 1986 Within 24 hours more damage was done when three players were ar rested after a man and woman said they were spit on slapped and harassed One of the players was harassed One of the players charged with simple assault and disorderly conduct while the two others were charged with disorderly conduct and public drunkenness Then came the biggest blow of all allegations by former South Carolina defensive tackle Tommy Chaikin that he used steroids for three years and that about 50 of the 100 players on the 1986 team also us ed them In an article in this Sports Illustrated Chaikin also said players used other drugs from co caine to LSD University officials denied allegations and head foot ball Coach Joe Morrison has re mained nearly mum his only comment coming in a one paragraph statement issued by the sports in formation department Morrison has promised to answer questions at his weekly conference Monday Interim Athletic Director King Dixon who was at a meeting in Kansas City when allega tions surfaced acknowledged the Chaikin controversy had the image think Tommy Chaikin has paid a price I think this university has paid a Dixon said have been hit right square between the eyes this university the coaching staff and every one of our sports (as well as) the administration and the athletic director North Carolina State's Canny Peebles hangs on to make tackle Saturday's Atlantic Coast Conterence game In Raleigh NC The after Rusty Charpia makes a pass interception during Wolfpack upset the ninth ranked Tigers 1 0 the media will give us an opportunity to work through our challenge at the university and to restore the image that may have been tainted by this one individual Tommy Dixon said is a profound im pact throughout the country ob viously I am concerned about it very much wish I could start all over again But I look back looking theme at a packed news conference in his office was just that He plan an investigation or what he called a The former US Marine said he and the university must focus on the future am not one to wallow in the mire of the Dixon said his voice rising have to go forward here atthe But too often going forward at South Carolina means more con troversy The athletic department has rarely gone more than a few months without a new controversy arising sit there and kid about things like junior quarterback Todd Ellis said I guess until it af fects you personally it mean much Every three months basical ly it seems like we have something not a scandal around here but RALEIGH NC (AP) or the third year in a row North Carolina State had spoiled an unblemished conference season for Clemson or NC State quarterback Shane Montgomery 10 3 Atlan tic Coast Conference victory over the ninth ranked Tigers was the most important is by far the biggest win had over said Mon tgomery who sparked the Wolfpack offense after he entered the game in the second quarter thought be able to score more but this is the toughest defense played As it was the Wolf pack defense kept a streak of its own alive It was the fourth straight game that NC State has not allowed a touchdown Tailback Chris Williams ran for a 5 yard touchdown with 10:04 left in the fourth quarter to lead North Carolina State to victory Then the Wolfpack defense allow Clem son to penetrate past the NC State 30 yard line was a great defensive effort on our said NC State coach Dick Sheridan hard to believe we held Clemson to only three points and that we allowed a touchdown in our last 16 certainly expect to keep Clemson from scoring a touchdown" Sheridan said was just a total team effort The score was tied at 3 3 at halftime and Clemson had several scoring chances in the third quarter But the Tigers could not capitalize on linebacker Doug recov ery of a Montgomery fumble which put Clemson on the Wolfpack 29 NC State cornerback ernandus Vinson picked off a Rodney Williams nass to end the threat Clemson safety Gene Beasley in tercepted a Montgomery pass early in the fourth quarter but the drive stalled and the snap on the punt sail ed over Chris head Vin son recovered the ball the Wolfpack took possession on the Clemson 21 yard line and Williams scored five plays later made some critical critical said Clemson coach Danny ord who has never lost to the same team three times in a at Clemson until now our kick ing game we had a high snap we missed two field goals that were makeable But in charge of the kicking game so my But ord said Clemson had offen sive opportunities and destructed The NC State defense held the Tigers on their next two possession Events of
