SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 20 1 987 Sports Section A special pro am Todtl Shanesy This pro am golf tour nament at the lorence Country Club will be in recognition of Joe Pearce Sr as he is affec tionately called by members of the club and friends around town was the founding father of the tournament back in 1982 Pearce along with tournament committee chairman Buddy Baker and the golf profes sional at the time Scott Bailey came up with the idea to have the best pro am tournament in the state It was Pearce however who took the idea from the planning stage and set it in motion He convinced Roger Wailey regional officer of Trust and Chris Yahnis a rep resentative of Coors beer to sponsor the tournament by donating $3500 each The idea of having a profes sional amateur tournament had been bouncing off the country club walls for years but it was Pearce who took the ball and ran with it Pearce is still the driving force behind the tournament This year he secured $4000 each in donations from Yahnis and rank Chisom of North Carolina National Bank which took over Trust in 1983 goal was to add to the prestige of the lorence Country Club by organizing the biggest possible tournament with the biggest names in area golf He knew that in order to pull this off a considerable sum of money had to be raised The $8000 contributed by Coors and NC acts as a lure to make the trip to lorence worthwile for golfers from all over the state The incentives to play in the tournament are just too good for them to ignore The professional with the low score will win $1000 of the total purse of $3200 The rest of the finishers and money earned range from $750 for second place on down to $100 for seventh place The players get $150 just for coming to the tournament regardless of how they finish In addition to the money prizes the golfers will receive a free hotel stay free food and several complimentary cocktail parties with playing partners and other members of the club All this is made possible through the efforts of Pearce A longtime member of the club and golf enthusiast Pearce took great interest in the junior pro gram at the club when his son Rocky was a participant Rocky is now mayor of lorence and still a golfer Pearce is still active in bring ing the enjoyment of golf to young and old alike As president of the Pee Dee Senior Golf Association he encourages ac tive participation from senior citizens Pearce also established a scholarship fund at rancis Marion College that brings young golfers into the area and gives them an opportunity to further their education that might otherwise pass them by In addition he makes regular contributions to the golf program as a whole orty years ago he founded the insurance firm of Pearce and Pearce Inc and has since been instrumental in developing unique policies and landmark benefit plans Prior to a Pearce brainstorm there were no health benefits for college students or recreational complexes in the area So in this pro am tour nament we honor a man who worked to make lorence and the rest of the world around him a better place We all owe thanks to Joe for caring Treadwell lifts Tigers jK i I AR Laserphoto INDING A GAP THROUGH THE MIDDLE Yarborough who will be making a rare appearance at Dover was 16th fastest overall He 11 haveto start 39th in a backup car Waitrip will go 40th over Bulldogs By BILL GILBERT Sports Editor CLEMSON In recent years the Georgia and Clemson football rival ry has been among the best in the country Nine of the last 11 meetings have been decided by a touchdown or less Three of the last four have been decided by a field goal in the last 10 seconds Saturday's 56th meeting between the two schools may have been the best David Treadwell kicked a 21 yard field goal with :02 seconds remaining as the eighth ranked Tigers defeated the 18th ranked Bulldogs 21 20 be fore a packed partisan crowd of 82000 at Death Valley And Georgia coach Vince Dooley had to have a feeling of deja vu Last year in Athens the senior placekicker from Jacksonville la split the uprights on the last play of the game as Clemson beat Georgia 31 28 It marked the first time in the his tory of the series that the Tigers have taken back to back victories since 1905 1906 However the series will take a brief pause as Georgia had to add another Southeastern Conference school to its schedule and will drop the Tigers until the year 1990 when the wars will resume of all very disap pointed in losing the ball Dooley said afterwards thought we played well enough to win and to lose right there at the end is really a tough way to lose really disap pointed for the But on the other side of the field it was an elated Danny ord very happy for our football team and I think we were very fortunate to ord said we found a way to win whether it was one point half pointI even know what the final score the excited nin th year head coach of the Tigers ad ded game winning kick came after the Bulldogs had gone ahead 20 16 on an eight yard scoring run by Rodney Hampton with 8:59 left to play The Georgia scoring drive came after Threadwell was low and wide on a 43 yard attempt earlier in the period Quarterback James Jackson connected on a 36 yard pass to Kirk Warner to spark the drive as the Bulldogs moved the the Tiger eight yard line On first down Hampton scooted around left end ran into heavy traf fic backed stepped and then sprinted into the endzone It was the first rushing touchdown given up by the Tigers this year had him for a loss on the sweep and he scored on ord said the first touchdown given up on the ground but Hampton really made a great run on the The Tigers took the following kickoff and picked up a couple of first downs before having to punt it away from the Georgia 44 Rusty Seyle who had his best day punting with a 418 average on four punts hit a high spiralling punt which was downed by the Tigers at the Georgia one foot line Jackson failed to gain an inch on the first play and on second down he tried to skirt left end but was nailed for a safety by cornerback James Lott Gene Beasley and Vince Taylor to cut the lead to 20 18 with 5:38 to Play It was a play Dooley would rather forget disappointed in myself for the poor call made when we were backed up in our own endzone a play that you could make 10 yards on or one that you could lose yardage on I'm disappointed in myself for making that call because I really think Clemson would have scored a touchdown on he said The Bulldogs were then given a free kick from their 20 and Donnell Woolford took the kick and returned it 25 yards to give the Tigers a first down at their 42 yard line Clemson then went to one of its patented time consuming drives reshman tailback Terry Allen was the mainstay of the drive as he pick ed up three first downs on runs of 11 II and 16 the last run gave the Tigers a first down at the Georgia 13 The Tigers had no timeouts re maining and was penalized five yards on first down for a delay of game On first and 15 at the Bulldog 18 Wesley Mcadden ripped through the line for seven yards and followed up with a four yard burst to the Georgia seven as the seconds kept ticking off the scoreboard clock ullback Tracey Johnson then grabbed a tight hold onto the football and plunged two yards and although he was short of the first down he gave Treadwell excellent field posi tion Treadwell then calmly walked onto the field and booted his fourth field goal of the afternoon to clinch the victory four field goals ties a Clemson record held by Obed Ariri and gives him 10 of 11 this season and 39 for his career which is good enough for second place on the career list behind Ariri did something right' said ord did a lot wrong especial ly using time outs I wasted everyone we had but our coaches overcame me "That's a good one to stop playing Georgia on I want many more like this It gets pretty tough on me But I want to congratulate our peo ple We didn't win it like we wanted to but what we set out to win "he added Georgia marched downfield on the first possession and capped a 12 play 56 yard drive with the first of two Steve Crumley field goals this one from 21 yards out with 8:44 to play in the first period But Treadwell offset the three pointer with one of his own from 30 yards out with 2 07 to play in the quarter The Tigers who had a punt returned for a touchdown last week against VPI watched Nathaniel Lewis streak down the right sidelines for a 76 yard touchdown run on punt less than one minute in to the second period as the Bulldogs went ahead 10 3 But it took less than two minutes for the Tigers roared back and knot ted the game at 10 10 as fullback Tracey Johnson exploded up the middle on a trap to race 38 yards for a touchdown Treadwell and Crumley matched field goals in the closing minutes of the half sending the two rivals to the dressing room knotted at 13 13 With 5:51 to play in the third quarter 29 yard field goal put the Tigers out front 16 13 and the Tiger defense held until Hampton's run in the fourth period The Tigers had possession of the football 22:39 out of a possible 30 minutes in the second half with the Bulldogs having possession only 3:09 in the fourth quarter offense I also thought we played well against a real power defense and they should get credit especially since it was able to score a touchdown against that defense in the fourth Dooley said has a solid football team on both sides of the ball They really keep after you all game long number two ranked rushing defense held Lan Tate who leads the nation in rushing with a 175 yards per game to 84 yards on 19 carries while the Bulldogs managed 268 yards of tota' offense to 337 yards by Clemson Allen led the Tigers with 97 yards on 16 carries while Johnson had 72 yards
