6D DETROIT FREE PRESSTHURSDAY, JUNE 19, 1980 Sugar is gold as Canada awaits the 4dream fight' FIGHT, from Page 1D "All sold," he says. "I got 'em for my friends. There's $150,000 worth right there." It can't be true. Bat it is. Ringside tickets for Leonard-Duran are priced at $500 each and none are available unless, maybe, you're a friend of Georgie.

No fight I recall ever brought that kind of price; a lot of times, you can have dinner with the president for less. "They put a heavy dollar on this fight, and they're getting it," he says. "Almost all the $300 and $200 seats are gone, too." Georgie seems to do tickets as a sideline business. And so he might be more expert than the promoters, who say they will have 70,000 at the fight, and press cynics, who say 35,000. Georgie says 55,000 is more like it, but in any case, this will be the richest non-heavyweight fight ever.

When Thomas Hearns gets here, he will wonder where justice is in this world. Just three months ago, remember, promoters were trying to put together a fight between The natives here fall over themselves reaching for anybody connected with this fight, especially Duran. The little Latino, who is merely 5-foot-7 (three inches shorter than Leonard and at least six below the gangly Hearns), is the French-Canadians' man of the hour. He has captured 'em. He wanders about wearing a T-shirt emblazoned "Bonjour, Montreal." The natives love him for it.

They stand in clusters in shopping centers everywhere watching films of his fights. He speaks little English but he manages enough in French to convince them he is more like them than the American champion. Both fighters have virtually finished preparations. They appeared at an informal weigh-in Wednesday, and, briefly, Duran startled observers. He weighed 154 pounds, seven more than expected.

Leonard was 147. But Leonard was not fooled. "He weighed in with his pants and shoes on," said Sugar Ray. "He probably had five pounds of gold coins in his pockets." If so, it was merely walking-around money for this fight. Closed-circuit locations There will be no home television broadcast of Friday's welterweight title fight between Sugar Ray.

Leonard and Roberto Duran in Montreal, but seats for the closed-circuit telecast are available in theaters and arenas throughout the state. Outstate, the Capital Theater in Flint, McMorran Arena in Port Huron, Long's Convention Center in Lansing, Chenery Auditorium in Kalamazoo, the Civic Center in Saginaw and the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor will carry the fight. In the Detroit area, the Fox Theater downtovi, the Royal Oak Theater, the State Fairgrounds, Calihan Hall on the campus of the University of Detroit, the Allen Park Civic Arena and the Pontiac Silverdome Minidome will telecast the bout. The telecast begins at 9 p.m. Friday, all tickets $20.

Thomas Hearns Duran, the No. 1 welterweight contender behind champion Leonard, and Hearns, ranked No. 2. They couldn't agree. So Duran was matched with Leonard, who wants no part of Tommy not until next year, at the earliest and Hearns will get a shot against WBA champion Pipino Cuevas in Detroit Aug.

2. The difference is maybe $25 million gross, promoters of the Hearns-Cuevas fight figuring it will be tight to take in the $2 million they've invested. IF HEARNS is not Sugar Ray (whose cut could top $10 million vs. Duran's $2 million) where fame and fortune is concerned, Detroit isn't Montreal, either.
