An examination by an orthopedics expert at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, has confirmed that the injury to the 23-year-old speedster's left wrist is a torn cartilage, and a unique type of surgery is being considered. The decision whether to have the operation will be Gibson's. Surgery is one of two possible courses of treatment; placing the wrist in a cast is the other option. But the rehabilitation period for either would surely be several months. If Gibson decides to have the operation, it will be performed at Mayo Clinic by Dr.

James Dobyns, one of medicine's foremost wrist experts. Dobyns has been in consulation on Gibson's case with several other top orthopedists around the country. "WE CAN'T REALLY talk about the odds of success, because we don't know," admitted Dr. Robert Teitge, the Tigers' orthopedics consultant who first suspected the presence of torn cartilage in Gibson's wrist. "It hasn't been done before and we don't know if it's going to work, but it makes sense to try." The recuperation period from surgery of the type being contemplated could only be described as "lengthy" by Teitge and Dr.

Clarence Livingood, the Tigers' team physician. Neither could make a prediction. "It's just not possible to make estimates," said Livingood. "Even with all the tests, the bottom line is what you're going to find in the wrist when you get in there." Teitge did say, though, that if Gibson undergoes the operation his rehabilitation period would continue "certainly into the beginning of next season." The length of the rehabilitation would depend on the amount of repairable tissue the surgeon has to work with when he attempts to patch the torn cartilage, Teitge said. If there is considerable bulk In the repaired area, Gibson could begin activity sooner; if the connection is "tenuous," the outfielder's reconditioning program would take longer.

TEITGE SAID the repair work, if it is done, would involve sutures of some kind, and might call for use of "tendon material" from some other area of the body to strengthen the repaired area. This procedure is not unknown in surgery. In fact, a minor tendon from pitcher Tommy John's right forearm was used as a substitute structure in his left elbow in a 1974 operation performed while he was a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers. That operation was a complete success despite warnings that John might never be able to pitch again. Surgery of that kind on the wrist of a baseball player is apparently unknown, however.

Gibson said he has not decided yet whether to have the wrist operation, but he admitted he'll probably make that decision within a week. "I don't know if it's that severe a surgery, but not too many have ever had it," said the slugging outfielder. "I don't know if they've ever done it on an athlete. "I'm glad I went up there (to Mayo). I knew something was wrong, and up there I could see it for myself I'm down, naturally.

But there's no use panicking; I've got plenty of years left." THE SURGEON at Mayo Clinic performed an arthrogram on Gibson's wrist, injecting a special dye on one side of the cartilage and then X-raying the wrist to check the dispersion of the dye. In a normal wrist, the dye would have stayed on one side of the cartilage. In Gibson's wrist, the dye leaked through and spread, confirming the presence of a tear in the cartilage. As Livingood emphasized, though, there is no way to determine the extent or severity of the tear until the wrist is opened to direct examination by the surgeon. The injured area is not accessible to the miniature arthroscopes which are commonly inserted in knee joints to study interior tissues.

Teitge pointed out that Gibson has three options: Surgery, immobilization in a cast or rest without immobilization. The latter course would probably not bring a cure, and Teitge said he doubted if immobilization would have any positive effect, either. Gibson said doctors have told him if he doesn't have the suggested surgery, there is a possibility he may develop "an arthritic problem" in the wrist. GIBSON'S WRIST was in a cast for about six weeks this summer, but the injury began hurting again just three days after he began to take batting practice. The joint was placed in another cast for a short time and then removed before Gibson visited Mayo Clinic early this week.

The rookie outfielder, leading the Tigers in home runs at the time, injured the wrist swinging at a pitch from Milwaukee's Bill Castro in the eighth inning of a June 7 game at County Stadium. Gibson apparently twisted the wrist abnormally when he hit the pitch off the end of his bat. He was out of action for a few days, returned to play sporadically for about a week and then was placed on the disabled list June 18. He has remained inactive ever since except for a few workouts just before he reinjured the wrist early this month. His season has now officially ended at 51 games, in which he compiled a .263 batting average with nine home runs and 16 RBIs.

A doctor's examination reveals Kirk Gibson is definitely out for the rest of this season and doubtful for '81 pending a decision whether or not to have surgery on his injured wrist. But, ah, there was more in the sixth. Robbins walked Staub and one out later watched in disgust as Zisk blasted a pitch Into the rightfield chairs (his 17th HR of the year) to give his club a 9-2 advantage.

Kemp contributed a solo HR, his 13th four-bagger, to the Tigers' meager run total in the bottom of the inning, and his mates loaded the bases later in the inning on two Infield hits and a walk to send Texas starter Ken Clay to the showers. But again the big hit was missing as reliever Danny Darwin fanned Wagner. The Texas bullpenner tantalized the Tigers again in the seventh when he walked the bases full with two out and then sawed off Champ Summers' bat on a pitch which produced an inning-ending groundball. Staub continued the debacle with an eighth-inning solo HR off Aurelio Lopez, and the Rangers got two more in the ninth on Bell's two-out double. Kemp's 14th HR, with Rick Peters on base, produced nothing more than some ninth-inning stirring in the Texas bullpen.

It merely delayed a merciful end to a hopeless afternoon. I wanted to make this night off special." As soon as St. Antoine saw the words, "Roses are red," she knew the ring was on its way. "He always starts off his letters that way," she said. The couple met 1 y2 years ago in a bar, where St. Antoine was a waitress.

Ujdur (pronounced YEW-jurr) has pitched all season at Evansville of the American Association. He leads the league in complete games (seven) and shutouts (three).

The 1978 graduate of the University of Minnesota has a 9-4 record and a 3.33 earned run average for the Triplets. Ujdur has worked 115 innings and allowed 103 hits while walking 38 and striking out 62 enemy hitters. He currently has a string of 22 scoreless innings. An Evansville newsman who has followed the Triplets this year said Udjur "couldn't get anybody out" early In the season when he was used in relief. But once he was put into the starting rotation "he became an entirely different pitcher." Ujdur is scheduled to report to Tiger Stadium in time for Sunday's doubleheader against Texas.

Weaver has been under treatment for a sore right shoulder for several days. He hasn't pitched since Aug. 10, when he started against the Rangers in Texas and was removed after allowing four runs in 2 innings. Weaver, who was called up from Evansville on May 28, said Saturday he has been experiencing pain in his shoulder for several weeks. He began with a string of nine scoreless innings in relief work, but since July 1 he has allowed nine earned runs in 23 '3 innings.

Auto Kings sweep again The Detroit Auto Kings swept their second straight doubleheader from the Cincinnati Rivermen Saturday night, 5-3 end 8-1, at East Detroit's Memorial Park to clinch a playoff berth in the North American Pro.
