a year at the time of his death His father Leslie formerly of Hills boro now resides at Urbana Dr Parshall started in the race horse business on the proverbial shoestring in 1920 with a pacer bought locally She was called Princess Mack He raced her one year at the county fairs sold her and bought another pacer onda bel Successful again Parshall be gan to add horses to his string and in a few years had a top stable be fore he locked horns with the boys" on the Roaring Grand AS BUSINESS expanded other buildings were erected at the same location and operations increased through the years During World War II the company reached its peak level in turning out castings for large machine tool firms Cast DR PARSHALL started training horses in 1920 shortly after he completed his veterinary course in Cincinnati and Indianapolis gradu ating from a school in the latter city Starting with a one horse sta ble hg rose in a few years to be come one of the leading drivers on the Grand Circuit His death de prived the sport of one of its most spectacular performers i Dr Parshall raced on the Grand Circuit for 25 years and by 1939 he had a record of having won more harness races In 13 years than any other driver in the country In 1936 he was credited with 67 wins only 14 of which were dash races othera being two three and four Ctwnparativoly few "DOC" WAS popular with fans and horsemen He had a reputation among horsemen for courage and daring and they recognized his great ability in the sulky "Besides being an outstanding driver Par shall was famed for developing colts and he was a great Judge of horse flesh Every record list in the trotting annals finds some horse that Par shall developed They are too num erous to list An outstanding per former was Muscletone developed and raced by Dr Parshall before he was sold for export to Italy At the We wish to thank our friends and customers for their loyal patronage dur ing our 29 years in business in Hillsboro to West Main Street The traction line flourished for two or three years bringing many people along the line for miles into the schools and the shopping district The ad vent of the automobile brought about its ultimate decline Today we have big high powered trucks In our fleet We have grown just as Hillsboro has grown And we have experienced skilled drivers Edwin of San Diego Calif and one sister Mrs Roeve Yelverton of Urbana and his father also of Urbana Dr Parshall moed to Urbana a number' of years ago straining at the fairgrounds 'there for many years During most of his outstanding career "Doc" raced a public stable He owned a number of the horses he raced and others belonged to leading patrons of the sport In 1948 he went with the Hayes air Acres Stable of DuQuoinBl one of the top Grand Circuit stables He developed a fine stable of colts for Hayes among them Lusty ong which won the 1950 Hambletdnian szp three year old tors 5 I Just as we hpve served this community with our lines from name is legendary on the big tracks of the country IlUgh MaynardJJgrshallon of Leslie and lo was born near Hillsboro December 21 1898 The Parshall family mov ed to Hillsboro and Hugh attended the Hillsboro Schools1 Dr Parshall was married to Ulah Duncan of near Morrow They had three sons "Hugh Nolan (Bud dy) and Melvin and Marvin twins Other survivors Include two broth ers Daryl of Millbrook and Pack Horse Set Pace or Early Stores Here The first stores in Hillsboro could not be classified as any par ticular type because they were able to sell only those things that could be brought in by pack horse over the mountains The pack horse was the express car' or freight truck of that day bringing in sup plies mall and passengers The roads were rough and little more than Indian trails following the streams or the tops of the ridges The malls were of neces sity irregular and money was so scarce that letters were ofttime sent anyone who was traveling in the direction the letter was to be sent oundry Is One Of Small But Sound Industries The Herschel White foundry lo cated on the corner of North West and Catherine Streets while not a large industry is one of the sound small businesses which hove de veloped in the Hillsboro area in the past several years The foundry which still carries the name of White although he to John Lucas tester in January 1956 was started in March of 1933 At that time Herschel and his brother (Tommy)' Whte be gan metal work in a building about 20 feet square At the start they hauled stoves in wheelbarrows from all over the town to repair them commercial setters and lock up men Ben Kent and Charley Bchllley The picture was submitted by Mr Workman who now resides In Orange Calif 1 PARSHALL raced the Hayes sta ble until the Delaware meeting of 1949 He went to California that fall' for the Grand Circuit meeting at Santa Anita but did not drive any rapes While driving his car home from' the west coast he suf fered a heart attack Dec 24 1949 The attack followed pneumonia contracted while on his vacation The local man showed some im provement and drove a race at the Marysville fair in September 1950 his last race He drove a Hayes trotter Scotch Pal ginning a class event i as he was familiarly known to his many friends was for 13 years straight the world's leading harness horse driver He was twiqe winner of the Hamble tonian with Lord Jim in 1934 and with Peter Astra in 1939 i He drove Chief Counsel to a 1:57 world championship for three year old pacers In 1949 he drove Lusty Song to a booming mark of 2:02 15 for a world cham pionship among two year old trot ters Hillsboro and Highland County down through the years have come up with a variety of talent in wide ly separated fields A keen interest in harness racing has held sway in the area for many years so it was natural that active participants in I he sport should develop The greatest of these figures was Dr Hugh Parshall Highland County native who died at the age of 52 at Urbana on Nov 29 1950 He was recognized as one of Amcri ca's greatest horse trainers and drivers of all time He gained his deputation during the period from 1920 to 1950 Other communities attempted to claim him but Hills boro was always to him i is buried in Oakdale at Urbana He had been suffering Parshall was the top driver Of the Grand Circuit and annually raced a large stable of trotters and pacers The former Hillsboro man was tied withS Palin in number of two minute horses developed Each drove 13 pacers and trotters in two minutes a record that has been in the books 'for many years?
