WINSTON CUP DAYTONA BEACH la Despite the fact Dover Downs Inter national Speedway is one of the tightest tracks on the tour Jeff Gor win Sunday marked only the seventh time in 51 races (137 per cent) at Dover the winner has come from the pole It was only the third time in 26 spring races the pole sit ter went on to win the race and the first time since David Pearson did so in 1975 Pearson remains the only driver to win more than one race from the pole in histo ry The Silver ox did so for both races in 1973 and again in the spring of 1975 win was the 13lh of his young career placing him in a tie with Dick Rathmann and Tim Rich mond on the all time NASCAR Winston Cup win list and putting him one behind Dick Hutcherson and Lee Roy Yarborough Mark Martin entered Miller 500 in Dover with four top five finishes in the last six spring events at the Monster Mile But things have been tough for the Arkansas driver of late problems with a timing chain rele gated him to a 40th place finish in the 42 car field It was the fourth straight event Martin has missed the top five in the final order at Dover and recent history has been tough in the fall as well where a top five fin ish in September at Dover has evad ed him since 1990 Darrell tough times at Dover continued Sunday After fin ishing third at Dover in both Sep tember of 1993 and Waltrip struggled since the track operators dug up the asphalt and replaced it with concrete His average finish since then is 323 Rusty Wallace had won twice and finished third once in the four previous races at Dover He continue that trend but he did con tinue to run well finishing seventh Looking at the leader board in miles and laps led on the Winston Cup tour this year reveals some interesting things Who is the driver who has led the most times? Dale Earnhardt The seven time Winston Cup champion has led a total of 35 times in nine of the 12 races this season Gordon has led 34 times also in nine races and teammate Terry Labonte has led 32 times and also has led in nine races (Dover not being one) Who has led the most miles? Gordon by far with 11 1419 miles led of a 458099 run (243 percent) Labonte is second with 75308 miles led Earnhardt is third with 57607 Laps led? Again Gordon with 1134 He is followed by Labonte with 620 and Wallace with 473 not just the race for the championship in the Winston Cup Series There are races everywhere else as well Only two drivers in the top 20 in the point standings are more than 100 points behind the dri ver in front of him Who are they? Terry Labonte in second is 136 points behind Earnhardt Ricky Rudd in fifth is 137 points behind Dale Jarrett Seven drivers in the lop 20 are less than 10 points behind the driver in front of them in the Busch Series when the schedule included more races at NASCAR weekly tracks such as South Boston Most races are now two and three day events However running a one day event brings back memories for many of the longtime veterans 'of the series such as Tommy Houston is like old time racing for said Houston who has started all 30 NASCAR Busch Series races held at South Boston used to do this all the time come in unload go through inspection then run some he said practicing working on your race setup because all of the practice going to gel NASCAR let us work on the cars after qualifying and no practice after qualifying so we have to qualify on the race setup makes for a really hectic he said fun and it 1 brings back a lot of memories of (he way we used to do QUICK NOTES: Dick Trickle is the only Winston Cup regular entered in this event at South Boston NASCAR Winston Cup crew chief Bill Ingle will try again at making his return to driving this weekend at South Boston He failed to qualify at Hickory in April and get to race due to rain after making the field at New Hampshire last month Gtt a on demonstration today!
