The Michigan Mile Track is "alive" again. Its stands are packed with people. The lines are long at the betting windows, so long that often the customers are unable to get their bets down in time.

Don Holmes, the veteran jockey who calls Oak Park home, is the leading rider again. He has brought home 15 winners in his quest to reach a lifetime goal of 2,000 this year. Hometowner Jack Foran, whose union of pari-mutuel clerks and other track employes delayed the opening of the thoroughbred season by two weeks, is the most successful horse trainer. He has saddled eight early winners. THE POLICIES of DRC management still have the union business agent grumbling, but even Foran has to admit that things are a lot better despite any shortcomings.

With the end of an abbreviated spring meet Saturday, everybody had time Sunday and Monday to survey the results of the first 19 days of tho roughbred racing at the DRC and prepare for the start of the 90-day summer meet Tuesday. The DRC, originally scheduled to be open on Easter Sunday, changed its plans immediaU'ly after the labor dispute which cost the track the first 13 days of an original 33-day spring meet. It put off the introduction of Sunday racing until April 6, and it shuffled its Easter Week schedule leading up to that date. Instead of being dark Monday through Thursday as first planned, the DRC shut down this Sunday and Monday, then tacked on three of the dark days to its scheduled 87-day summer meet with the belated approval of racing commissioner Leo Shirley. IF THE NEXT 90 racing days are anything like the first 19, the track should get out of the red this year on its thoroughbred operations.

During the first three weeks of the 1975 season the DRC saw big increases in both attendance and betting over last year. Crowds averaged 7,375 against 6,081 last spring, while the handle averaged $697,277 compared with $593,489. Not only are both figures lV2 to 19 percent ahead of the 31-day spring meet of 1974, but they're almost as good as the showing at the 90-day summer meet, the heart of the season. In that prime time, attendance averaged 7,075 and betting $720,000. With the added stimulus of Sunday racing for the rest of the DRC season, the averages are sure to go higher.

7,435 Fans Break Records at Norlliville Northville Downs broke all betting records Saturday night with dollars to spare on the next-to-last weekend of its record-setting winter harness meet. With a crowd of 7,435 packing into the suburban half-miler, the Downs handled $678,039, nearly $70,000 more than it had ever done in its 32-year history. The old mark of $608,697 was set July 3, 1971. In the feature race, Bea and Charley Farber's Easy Irv returned home from an all-winning West Coast campaign to whip Spring's Pride with a 2:04 1-5 mile, fastest of the winter here. Ted Smith was in the sulky.

"I KNOW THIS MUCH: If he can come back he could still be some kind of pitcher.

I'm sure the Yankees never would have released him if they weren't pretty sure his arm was shot. They've got their rotation set and he wasn't in it so I guess they didn't want to fool with him. "But arms are funny you just never know. Look at Luis Tiant. Everybody had given up on him and look what he's done for Boston the last three years.

There are always a few pitchers like that. "Mel has always had trouble in the spring, but I understand this is something different," Houk noted. "I've still got all my old pitching charts from the Yankees and every spring his arm used to kick up about the second! week. "We wouldn't be able to use him for a couple of weeks and then he'd come around. That could be what's happening now.

You've got to remember, he didn't pitch after the first of August. He didn't pick up a ball again until this spring. So maybe it's just going to take him a little longer this spring." Stottlemyre, who has more shutouts to his credit than any active pitcher in the American League, won 20 games three different times during his 10-year career with the Yanks. BY JIM HAWKINS Free Press Sports Writer LAKELAND Mel Stottlemyre, wherever you are, Ralph Houk would like you to give him a call. The Tigers definitely are interested in the 33-year-old righthander, who was abruptly released by the New York Yankees this weekend.

"I'm not interested to the point where I'd say I'd sign him right away but I sure would like to hear from him," the Tiger manager said Sunday. "I'D LIKE TO HEAR what he has to say," Houk continued. "He's a very forthright, honest guy. He'd tell me if he could still pitch or not I know he would." Stottlemyre, who was hampered last season by shoulder problems and hadn't pitched anything but batting practice this spring, indicated Saturday when he was cut loose that he planned to contact several teams, including the Tigers, about a possible job. Houk was general manager in New York in 1964 when Stottlemyre came up from Syracuse to help pitch the Yankees to a pennant.

He also pitched for Houk, the manager, for eight years. And it was obvious Sunday that Houk still has a great deal of respect for the veteran pitcher. "He's such an outstanding guy, and such a competitor he's everything that there is PERFECTA (2-4) paid 160.00 ACAPULCO Jose Napoles retained his welterweight title but will have to be under doctor's care for at least a month because of injuries he suffered during the Saturday night fight, his doctor said Sunday. Judges charged that challenger Armando Muniz had butted Napoles in the face several times with his head, and suspended the fight in the 12th round. Napoles was declared the winner by points.

VICTOR WEISS, the challenger's manager, said: "We will protest this decision. When a fight is suspended because of dangerous injuries like these, it is considered a technical knockout against the boxer who can no longer fight, but here the opposite occurred." Napoles, 35, suffered a severe wound on his left eyelid and another small cut on his right eyebrow, in the fight which earned the champion $150,000. Muniz picked up $15,000. "The eyelid wound is very deep, and damaged the muscle," said Dr. Federico Soto, of the Acapulco Boxing Commssion, "It will need at least 10 to 12 stitches." Dr.

Horacio Rarimiz operated on Napoles Sunday morning. He said he would keep Napoles under observation in order to determine whether the wound had injured his eye. The decision to halt the fight was reached after the ring physician had visited Napoles twice in his corner. Referee Ramon Beiu-men stopped the fight once in the first minute of the 12th round and called the doctor in. Dr.

Soto described the wound over Na poles' left eye as "dangerous, "and after consultation with the World Boxing Council representative and the boxing commissioners from Acapulco and Mexico City, the fight was stopped. THE OFFICIAL decision said that the fight had been suspended because of the health for Napoles and said the points accumulated up to the time it was halted were counted for the final decision. Berumen cautioned Muniz at least three times about butting Napoles with his head. The judges cited two dangerous head butts in the third and fifth rounds. "The judges noted the head butts but said nothing about the dirty punches Napoles threw," Muniz said.

"This is an injustice. I'm hounded by bad luck because I was one millimeter away from becoming a champion." Weiss said that he would send a protest note to the World Boxing Association, which did not recognize the fight as a title match, and to the WBC. Napoles is recognized by both the WBC and the WBA as champ. Napoles, 73-6, was making his 14th defense of the title he won in 1969 when he knocked out Curtis Cookes. He lost the title in the latter part of 1970 to Billy Backus but regained it in a rematch six months later.

He has knocked out all the challengers he has had, with the exception of Muniz. Muniz, 28, is a high school teacher, but he has never exercised that profession. He began boxing in 1970 and in 47 matches, has won 39, lost seven and had one tie. Yanks' Tidrow Breaks Hand FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) Trainer Tommy Doyle, who saddled Avatar to win the 1975 Santa Anita Derby, said Sunday the Kentucky-bred chestnut colt "still has more developing to do" and his next major goal will be the Kentucky Derby.

As a tuneup, the trainer added, Avatar will run next In either the California Derby at Golden Gate Fields or the Bluegrass Stakes at Keeneland, Ky. While Avatar may have earned the laurels as the best in the West in Saturday's derby, many horsemen feel the region's 3-year-old division still offers a wide-open picture. AVATAR AND Rock of Ages as outsiders ran 1-2, a bare nose apart, while the virtual co-favorites, Diabolo and George Navonod, finished third and fourth in the seven-horse field. They, too, will probably make the Run for the Roses at Louisville May 3. The sophomore set at the Santa Anita meeting has taken turns beating each other and the Kentucky classic could offer further surprises.

Avatar is a son of Graustark, who was a red-hot favorite to win the Kentucky Derby before an injury sidelined him few days before the race. He won $82,900 to go with his previously earned $44,182 and registered his fifth win in 12 starts. Doyle stuck by his pre-race evaluation of the colt when he said: "I feel the colt is coming up to the race perfectly. (He's always impressed me as the sort that could improve as the race lengthened, and he's done nothing lately to show me otherwise. It seems to me that while we may have seen all these other colts at their best, Avatar still has more developing to do as a race horse and may surprise them all." CHAMPION RIDER Bill Shoemaker, who was seeking his seventh Santa Anita Derby winner aboard Diabolo, said his colt stumbled right after the start and, "I lost my best chance.

I had to find a spot behind the lead horses and when I asked him to run, the other horses still had plenty left." Of the 37 previous derby winners here, 26 have taken a shot at the Kentucky Derby. Five won and four others were in the money. The last winner here and there was Majestic Prince in 1969. Majestic Prince was owned by Canadian millionaire Frank McMahon who is the owner of Diabolo. Continued from First Sports homers and a total of 25 runs. His ERA is an unsightly 8.65. And even he appears deeply concerned. Lolich will pitch once more before the Tigers break camp Thursday against these same Cincinnati Reds. Coleman, who isn't having what you could honestly call a good spring either, will work twice more.

And, based on what happens in those three games, Houk will decide who hurls the season opener and who has to wait until the second game. "There's no sense crossing that bridge until we get there," the Tiger manager said Sunday. "I'm set up so I could go either way so I might just as well wait. Sometimes things happen that make you change your mind. There's no need to make that decision right now, and I'm not going to." AS THE TIGERS' regular Opening Day pitcher, Lolich enjoyed remarkable success, winning five while losing two.

Sunday the Tigers definitely appeared doomed when the Reds leaped on Lolich for eight runs in the second inning. A dozen Cincinnati batters paraded to the plate and eight of them hit safely while another walked, with Bill Plummer and Joe Morgan each belting a three-run homer. But the Tigers gradually crawled back as rookie Art James hit a three-run homer himself in the second inning and Freehan homered with one aboard in the fifth. Nate Colbert smacked a bases-loaded triple in the seventh and Danny Meyer homered in the bottom of the eighth to pull the Tigers to within one of the Reds, who had only scored twice after that initial outburst. Then in the bottom of the ninth, the Tigers loaded the bases as Ron LeFlore led off with a single, John Knox bunted him to second, Willie Horton doubled and Colbert was intentionally passed.

ACTUALLY, LEFLORE should have scored from second with ease on Horton's double, but the rookie centerfielder first held up at second base, thinking the ball would be caught, then tripped rounding third and ended up flat on his face. Not that it mattered, though, as Freehan knocked in his third and fourth runs of the game with a clutch single off Reds' reliever Pedro Borbon. The Tiger catcher, in fact, has now hit safely in 10 of the 12 games in which he has played and continues to lead the club with a hearty .410 batting average, including 10 mdn 3i4Y0, 6 f. 107 xTom's Tuf SIH 17 Tvpical Luck 112 xwnislling Sznn Copyright (1975) Triangli Publication Inc.
