MAYER Morning News Sports Writer CHARLESTON Mitchell setting new records with each run gained 173 yards and two touchdowns including a 75 yard spectacular to help power The Citadel to a 2M Southern Conference football win over VMI Saturday night Mitchell a 5 9 188 pound senior from St Ga got 137 of his yards in the second half in becoming the first man in Bulldog history to rush for over 3000 yards in a career Mitchell who now has 3150 yards moved past Larry Robinson and Don Garrick into fifth place on the all time rushing list for the state of South Carolina George Rogers of USC is the leader with 3854 prior to the NC State game The Bulldog star also passed Andrew Johnson for most career touchdowns at The Citadel when he scored from a yard out in the final period to give him career marks of 23 touchdowns and 140 points heroics came in the second half however What did the Keydets in were three devastating long gainers that turned a close game statistical ly into a one sided outcome on the scoreboard It began early when Eric Manson returned the opening kickoff 53 yards to the VMI 43 Highlighted by two pass com pletions from quarterback Tracey Shrader and a fourth and inches first down run by Wilford Austin Austin put the Bulldogs ahead 7 0 with a one yard run Oliver James appeared to br ing VMI back when he took a Mike Knox punt on the dead run and raced 50 yards for a score that was taken away because of an offside penalty The penalty gave the Bulldogs a first down at their 30 and on the next play Shrader rambled 64 yards to the VMI 6 on a brilliant individual effort Shrader eased in from the 5 two plays later to make it 14 0 with John Thompson's second conversion at the 2:30 mark of the first period The 14 0 margin stood firm at halftime as VMI shuffling bet ween Dan ritz and rank Brown at quarterback crossed Bulldog territory just once to The Citadel 39 VMI spent a great deal of time in Bulldog territory in the second half but were denied by a Stalwart defense which recorded its first shutout in two years The Keydets behind the runn ing of last leading Southern Conference rusher loyd Allen drove to the Bulldog 19 with the second half kickoff But quarterback Brown was jarred loose from the ball al the 17 and Bulldog tackle Sedrick Brown recovered in mid air rambling to the 25 It took Mitchell one play a magnificent 75 yard TD jaunt win 300 games Saturday when his Crimson Tide buried Kentucky 45 0 in a Southeastern Conference football game was surprised and delighted that they gave me the game Bryant said proudly add it to the trophy room where 50 years from now when one of their children sees it he can say played in that Bryant said he was getting tired of hearing all the talk about numbers and now on I'm not talking any numbers game only worried about No That will be the next number on the losing side of his ledger as his 36 season total now stands at 300 77 16 no different from the 100th Bryant added feel any different than I did 20 years ago Am I supposed The Tide started sluggishly but errupted for three quick fourth quarter touchdowns that turned the game into a rout getting a boost from star freshman Linnie Patrick who set up two second half scores on runs of 60 and 38 yards The 300th victory left Bryant only 14 shy of the all time record held by Amos Alonzo Stagg The only other member of the 300 victory club is Glen (Pop) Warner with 313 Coach ran Curci of Kentucky extended congratulations to Bryant for the milestone victory a phenom just to be able to survive this Curci said is just a super produced six turnovers in the game recovering three fumbles and grabbing three passes in cluding two by Harris Rogers Led Gamecocks Thrash NC State 30 10 By PHIL PURVIS Morning News Sports Writer COLUMBIA George Rogers rushed lor 193 yards in 26 attempts Saturday night at Williams Brice Stadium and scored three of South Carolina's four touchdowns as the 18th ranked (Associated Press Gamecocks crushed the North Carolina State Wolfpack 30 10 The Gamecocks dominated every phase of the game large ly on the ability of Rogers to give third and fourth efforts Carolina rushed for 332 yards on 62 attempts against the number six team in the nation against the rush Entering the contest State allowed only 677 yards per game on the ground The Gamecocks ranked 12th nationally in team rushing had a 2725 yards per game average Carolina fell short of its 350 scoring average that was tied for ninth prior to the clash whipped North Carolina said USC head football coach Jim Carlen were fired up and are not a bad foot ball team thought the big difference in the game was (Garry) Harper's passing They were zeroing in on George no question it was a big factor you beat a team like State 30 10 and people say you need to score more points Then you know you are a better team than you were three or four years One of the reasons is Rogers Carlen admitted the 6 2 220 pound senior from Deluth Ga out in the status field It is easy foir the fans to cheer The Gamecocks were hampered by 11 infractions for 112 yards 81 coming in the first half after nine errors The 23 7 halftime lead was something short of a miracle considering at tempts to keep the 43rd meeting of the two teams close through penalties and miscues both of fensively and defensively USC leads the series 20 19 4 Three Harper passes were almost picked off by the Wolfpack one of which would have been a certain six pointer Three defensive pass in terference calls hurt USC with one leading to Tol one yard plunge to tie the game at 7 7 with 5:29 left in the first quarter The other two came just before the half giving the Wolfpack a first and goal at the USC 7 Only Ed goal line interception prevented another touchdown The Gamecocks scored on the running of Rogers and the huge holes opened by the offensive line that allowed the Hiesmon Trophy candidate to walk into the endzone untouched for two while rushing for 140 of 176 first half yards on the ground The offensive line gave Harper plenty of protection allowing him to complete nine of 13 attempts for 120 yards for a total first half output of 296 yards The Wolfpack rushed the ball 14 times in the first half com pared with 30 for USC for 82 yards and Avery passed for another 81 completing six of nine attempts with one in terception The Gamecocks took the McBride fouled out Schmidt lined his home run over the left field fence to snap a 4 4 tie It was the 48th of the season for the major league home run leader and boosted his National League RBI lead to 121 The victory sends Philadelphia against the winner of the West Division either Houston or Los Angeles in the bestof five series starting in Philadelphia Tuesday night Tug McGraw 5 4 stopped the Expos cold riday night and came on in the ninth and did it again Saturday In the two games in which he appeared McGraw allowed only one hit while facing 16 batters Stan Bahnsen 7 6 took the loss in relief The Phillies tied the game 4 4 in the top of the ninth on Bob Boone's RBI single off reliever Woodie ryman The single sent home Bake McBride who had reached first on a forceout grounder and taken second on a slow roller by Mike Schmidt The Expos had gone ahead 4 3 with a two run rally in the seventh helped along by a pair of Philadelphia errors Chris Speier hit a routine pop fly with one out that second baseman Manny Trillo dropped for an er ror Ron Lelore who has been sidelined with a broken wrist ran for Speier and stole his 95th base continuing onto third when catcher Keith Moreland threw the ball into center field Jerry White whose two run homer in the third had given Montreal a 24) lead off Larry Christenson hit a sacrifice fly to score Ilore for 3 3 Rodney Scott capped the rally with an RBI double Trailing 2 1 the Phillies went ahead in the seventh on four consecutive singles including a two run hit by Greg Luzinski The start was delayed three hours and 10 minutes by rain LA Holds Off Astros 2 1 LOS ANGELES AP) Steve Garvey had three hits in cluding his 26th home run and Jerry Reuss scattered seven hits as Los Angeles edged Houston 2 1 preventing the Astros from clinching the Na tional League West Division for the second game in a row Should the Dodgers defeat Houston a third straight game Sunday they would conclude the regular season in a tie and
