Dunn is not in the form that he will be at Michigan as far as his throwing but I feel confident he will have 100 percent recovery from the thumb McGee said after Duke ran its record to 2 0 are pleased were faced with a third down and one yard situation Warren Ratchford took the handoff from uller and was met head on by Scott Woerner who knocked the football out of hands and recovered for the Bulldogs Six plays later Robinson booted a field goal from 29 yards out and the Bulldogs held a 3 0 lead Clemson started a drive in the early stages of the second quarter and moved from its 29 down to the Bulldog 28 where aced with a second and five Tracy Perry ripped off tackle Rhett scored on an 18 yard run in the second quarter and a 26 yard run with 3:07 left in the game to bring Duke from behind South Carolina took a 12 10 lead midway in the third quarter when Duke center Kevin Kelly snapped the ball over the head of punter Ricky Brummitt who recovered in the end zone Senior quarterback Mike Dunn making his first start following a pre season thumb injury then directed the Blue Devils on an 80 yard drive climaxed by 26 yard blast over the right side of the line for the decisive score Dunn keyed the drive with two 15yard runs around left end and a 14 yard keeper around right end South scoring came on a 39 yard by fullback George Rogers in the first period and Eddie 36 yard field goal in the second quarter Rhett led the Duke rushing attack on 23 carries for 122 yards Rogers a 200 pound sophomore was the leading rusher with 150 yards The Gamecocks marched 73 yards for a touchdown on their second possession with Rogers bursting through the right side of the line and cutting down the sidelines for a final 39 yards Duke stymied in the opening period tied the game on a three play 53 yard drive Dunn who sat out the Blue season opening victory over Georgia Tech passed 35 yards to flanker Derrick Lewis at the Gamecock 18 and Rhett took a pitchout around left end and dived into the corner of the end zone for the touchdown on the first play of the second quarter Leopard set South Carolina back in front on the next series and the Gamecocks moved to the Duke 13 before stalling 36 yard field goal came with 7 45 remaining in the half The Blue Devils were set up deep in South Carolina territory later in the quarter when nose Andy Schoenhoft recovered a fumble by Rogers at the Gamecock 19 Dunn passed to spilt end Jeff Comer for a first down at the 9 but the South Carolina defense stiffened and Duke had to settle for a 22 yard field goal by Scott McKinney South Carolina threatened once more before the half but a 53 yard field goal attempt by Leopard fell short in the end zone territory but Vanderbilt linebacker John Pointer in tercepted a Henderson
