By JIM MCLAURIN Morning News Sports Writer RALEIGH NC Next to orange Clem son University coach Charlie favorite color has to be brown Brown for Clemson tailback Lester Brown who rushed for 117 yards in 26 carries and two touchdowns and Brown for Tiger linebacker Bubba Brown who spearheaded a super Clemson defensive effort with 17 unassisted tackles These two players who added a brownish tinge to the Tiger Orange were well reward ed for their output with the Chevrolet Offen sive and Defensive Players of the Game awards and a 33 10 victory for Clemson in the regionally televised contest at Carter Stadium Pell was quick to point out that in spite of the great Brown effort the victory belonged to the team: is the greatest team effort I've ever been associated with since I first put on a football uniform back in 1958 and that covers a lot of great games and some great the Clemson mentor said in a post game interview players prepared hard all week for this game and this afternoon we mashed together for 60 Clemson indeed put it all together as they rushed for 147 yards and passed for 118 while holding NC State to a net total of 206 yards and shutting down the volatile Heisman Trophy candidate Ted Brown to a net 70 yards for his work own Heisman nominee senior quarterback Steve uller had a little better time of it completing 10 of 20 passes for 118 yards rushing for 17 yards in 7 carries and directing the Tiger attack to the win Praising performance Pell said: played this afternoon with only one practice (A minor ankle injury against last opponent Duke kept uller from going full speed during the week) What you saw out there this afternoon was talent not Commenting on the team effort: saw our offensive line come off the ball they ran the ball on a strong State defense The offense kept coming up with the big play The defense did a great job on Ted Brown a great back and it took a great effort to stop him were a lot of great plays today big plays and to single out any one or two players be fair because it was all team today They talked about playing together all week and I think it all came together today at 1:50 were several big turning points in the game but I think that Rex in terception (Yarn intercepted a Scotth Smith pass at the Clemson six and raced 94 yards for a Tiger touchdown as the fourth quarter got under way) really mailed the coffin lid down we happened to catch State after their emotional victory last week (34 7 over rival North Carolina) and I think that helped us They have a great football About his Tigers' performance Pell said: "If I could describe a reason they played so well this afternoon they just did The game plan devised by our coaches was just out of sight The players worked extremely hard to get their assignments down getting their keys and everything it took and they ex ecuted well I can't imagine a victory being more important to Clemson football than the one that occured this The win along with 721 yards on 143 carries carried 15 yards on a pitchout from Ramsey to the 40 and Ramsey followed with a 12 yard pass to McKinney to move into Tarheel territory On a first down at North 45 Ramsey carried for seven yards and Wright followed suit with a seven yard run to the Tarheel 31 With just two minutes to play Wright bulled his way for a yard and on second down Ramsey dropped back to pass but was'dropped for a nine yard loss by defensive tackle Donnell Thompson A The big play by Thomson a 6 4 260 pound sophomore from Lumberton NC turned out to be the biggest play of the day for the Tarheels as it stopped the potential winning drive Ramsey passed to Wright over the middle on the next play for eight yards but it was short of the first down and the Gamecocks had to go field goal Eddie Leopard came in to attempt a 48 yard try but (Leopard's longest field goal this year had been a 38 yarder against Ohio) the try was poorly hit and short as the Gamecocks fell for the first time this year at Williams Brice Stadium the quarterback South Carolina coach Jim Carlen said following the game felt we had gotten good pass protection and we were going to throw the ball But one of our young linemen as it turned out missed his man and Ramsey got North Carolina coach Dick Crum said that Thompson's sack of Ramsey was the big play of the game but knew South Carolina had the ability to
