FRIDAY, APRIL 28, 1967 A Arwe NEW POSTMASTER O'Harra Man of Varied Experience By GREGORY MARTIN the Morning News Staff Writer Florence's new postmaster, Robert L. O'Harra, brings a varied field of experience ranging from military to ath- Mrs. letic to political into the post office. The 44-year-old Florence businessman is a veteran of two wars and three years on the University of South Carolina football team. He is presently a member of the Florence County Council but says he will give up that responsibility when he takes over as postmaster in mid-June.

O'Harra was appointed postmaster Thursday by 6th District Congressman John R. McMillan from among the top other two contenders were Hart Spears and B. B. Gilbert. He succeeds acting postmaster W.

P. (Billy) Barefoot who has accepted another position with the postal service in Atlanta, Ga. O'Harra is a white-haired man with an athletic build and the self confidence of someone with a great deal of experience in dealing with other people. "I am privileged to be appointed to this position and I will try to do an outstanding job as postmaster." he said. "I am looking forward to into this new type of going work and I think it will be an interesting and challenging: assignment.

"I am not very familiar with the position as yet and I don't have any immediate plans for handling it. However, I think I can work with football scholarship and was the starting quarterback for the Gamecocks in 1942. He took time out to serve in the Air Force in the latter part of World War II and spent 15 months in the Far Eastern Theater as a B-29 pilot. 'O'Harra returned to Carolina and played two more years of football while picking up a degree in education. He is now a major in a civil affairs unit of the Army Re- My Tr serve.

He has been in the insurance business since leaving Carolina and has been very active in civic affairs. J. Rimer of 1301 Pinckney Ave. Miss Rimer took top honors for an essay on the official 1967 Civitan topic: "Building Good Citizenship For Democratic Living Today and Tomorrow." She received a $50 savings bond from the club. Second and third place honors also went to Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Board of Directors for three years. He was chairman of the Florence County welfare board for four years, a past president of the Florence Lions Club and a member of its board of directors for three years.

He is a director of the United Fund, a member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board and a chairman of the Fund Drive for the University of South Carolina at Florence. McMillan cited O'Harra's record with service clubs in making the appointment. His active interest community is one of outstanding features of the new postmaster, McMillan said. Julia Munn Gainey, 61, of Rt. 3, Darlington, will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Friday in Stoudenmire Chapel by Rev. Laverne Gandy and Rev. J.

R. Aiken. Burial will be in the Bethel Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery near Mars Bluff. Pallbearers will be George Gainey Willard Gainey, Elliott Munn, Herbert Munn, Jesse Munn and Rudolph Munn. Honorary bearers will be members of the Florence Police Department.

Mrs. Gainey died Tuesday night in a Florence hospital after a short illness. William H. Medlin CONWAY William Henry Medlin, 83, of Conway, died Thursday in a Loris Nursing Home after a long illness. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m.

Friday in Goldfinch Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park in Bennettsville at 3:30 p.m. Mr. Medlin was born in Marlboro County and spent most of his life in Bennettsville. For 44 years, until retirement in 1954, he was an agent for the ACL Railroad Co.

He was a member of Trinity Methodist Church in Conway, a member of the Masonic Order and Woodmen of the World. Surviving are a son, Dr. L. M. Medlin of Conway; a daughter, Mrs.

Fred (Mattie) Ritter of Ahoskie, N. seven grandchildren. a 16-year-old son and two younger daughters. The new postmaster is a graduate of Florence's McClenaghan High School and the University of South Carolina. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 4:30 p.m. in Whitner Funeral Home. Burial will be in McCall Cemetery. Rev. Lane W.

Erwin will officiate. Mr. Eason was a son of the late J. T. and Betty Virginia Stubbs Eason of Marlboro County.

He was twice married, first to the late Iva Wade, and then to the late Mrs. John Clifton Wells Eason who died last fall. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Bessie McCullough; and five step-children, Clifton Wells and Mrs. Dorothy W.

Crosland, both of Bennettsville, Dr. Carl Wells of Berkeley, Mrs. Marjorie Ford of Maxton, and Mrs. Clara Hollingsworth of Modesta, Calif. Ira L.

Barrineau OLANTA Ira Leonis Barrineau, 35, of Sumter, and formerly of the Barrineau community near Lake City, died Thursday afternoon in Shaw Air Force Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted in Floyd Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Friday by Rev. George H. Nichols Jr. Burial will be in Olanta Baptist Cemetery.

Rev. Crawford was a son of late James M. Crawford and Mary Coffe Crawford of Amhurst, Va. He was a theology graduate of Emory University. He served in the Virginia and S.

C. Methodist Conference. After retirement, he moved to Turbeville. Surviving are two sons, Ronald Crawford and Douglas Giles Crawford, both of Sumter; a sister, Mrs. Minnie Gochenov of Lexington, and four grandchildren.
