They met twice last season, but U-D dropped one game this year in order to beef up Its schedule. U-D, with three games to go before the National Invitational Tournament, is 16-7. The "thrills" of the cham pionship race are wrapped up in Wisconsin's visit to Ohio State." The undefeated Buckeyes should handle the Badgers as they please.

They already have whacked them, 100-68, in Madi son. OHIO STATE is playing mainly for some proud statis tics. These presently show the Buckeyes 11-0 in the Big Ten, 21-0 for the season and pos sessed of a winning streak extending back to last March. Victories In their three remaining games would make the Buckeyes the first team unbeaten In Big Ten play in 17 years and match the longest winning streaks In Big Ten history. Minnesota, in 1901-1904, and Wisconsin, in 1912-1913, took 29 straight.

Purdue and Iowa arer still mathematically in contention with only two defeats each. Both could be eliminated this weekend. The Boilermakers figure to win Saturday, facing Michigan State at Lafayette, but trouble awaits Iowa at Minnesota. THE GOPHERS retain a chance to finish in the first division. They also identify Iowa with one of their darkest recent moments.

Five days after the football humiliation in the Rose Bowl, the Gophers faced Iowa in regionally televised basketball. The Minnesota Image was kicked around by 40-16 at half- time and by 71-46 for the game Monday the Hawkeyes get Purdue in Iowa City, which could finish the Boilermakers. MICHIGAN will go to Northwestern, and Illinois will be televised from Indiana (4:30 p.m., Channel 2) to fill out the Saturday schedule. The Wolverines will move on to Wisconsin Monday for their last good chance to escape finishing all alone in the Big Ten cellar. The Badgers, with two vic tories, have won only one more than Michigan.

ELSEWHERE around the state, Michigan Tech, Hope, Hillsdale, Detroit Tech, Albion, Alma, Eastern Michigan and Olivet will close out their 1960-61 seasons. St. Norbert is at Michigan Tech, Hope at Hillsdale, Soo Tech at Detroit Tech, Adrian at Albion, Alma at Olivet and East ern Michigan at Northern Illinois. Olivet, now loser of 45 straight games only on shy of the national record held by Slillsaps (Miss.) College, Is hopeful of escaping the dubious distinction. Boosters of Olivet basketball think Saturday night will be the best chance the Comets have had all year to win a game.

Alma (4-14) lost two regulars to the books a couple of weeks ago. There will be action on two courts in Detroit with Wayne State hosting Case Tech at U-D Memorial and Lawrence Tech winding up its home season at Hackett Fieldhouse against Bluffton. Lawrence's John Bradley leads the nation small-college scor ers with a 32.9 average. LIT is still first in team offense with a 95.7 average. Palmer, Burke 'Move To the Top BATON ROUGE, La.

(TJPI) Defending champion Arnold Palmer and Jackie Burke shaved five strokes off par Fri day, tying at 65 for the first-round lead of the $20,000 Baton Rouge Open. Par took a licking despite rain, gusty winds and a threat of tornadoes. Officials relaxed the rules because of the soggy course, allowing players to move the ball clear of water hazards. Burke, of Kiemasha Lake, N. set the early pace on the Sherwood Forest course and then sat back to watch Palmer match it.

THE UNIVERSITY of Detroit, showing no mercy on a pair of weak basketball foes, will take on another 97-pound weakling Saturday night when it goes to Windsor for a game with Assumption. It will be the first and, luckily for Assumption, only meet- Handicap. It will be Rex Ellsworth's Prove It, the odds-cn favorite, against Detroiter C. W.

Smith's American Comet, the dark horse, in the West Coast's biggest race of the winter. Nine other thoroughbreds have been entered in the 1 Simile classic, but few are likely to challenge the sensational Prove It. In fact, none was a match for American Comet in the $50,000 San Antonio Handicap two weeks ago. TOMPION, C. V.

Whitney's erratic four-year-old, is probably the best of the lot, which includes New Policy, Oink, Grey Eagrle, Prince Blessed. First Balcony, Top Caliber, Top Double and Sea Orbit. Both Prove It and American Comet are Calif ornia-breds, but both went East to make their fortune at the Detroit Race Course. Unraced a a two-year-old. Prove It turned up at DRC last summer and proved himself master of the three-year-olds.

He won five straight before losing his winter debut at Santa Anita by half a length. Since that December defeat Prove It has strung together three winning races including the $100,000 Maturity Stakes. American Comet Is a tough horse when he's right, but he often loses his form suddenly. While Prove It was running against the three-year-olds at the DRC, The Comet was running in the handicap ranks. Both will run Saturday under feather weight of 115 pounds, while Tompion packs topweight of 124.

ALMOST overshadowed by the rich Santa Anita race is the $100,000 Flamingo Stakes for three-year-olds at Hialeah Park. It will bring together a slim field of seven for its 32nd running of the l-mile preview of the Kentucky Derby. Heavy favorite is a native son, the Florida-bred Carry Back. He may be odds-on to defeat Crozler and Sherluck, both of whom he defeated tn the Everglades Handicap recently. At long odds are Your Bill, Try Cash, King's Song and Hero's In.

Eddie Arcaro, who flew in from Santa Anita to ride Calu met Farm's Beau Prince, was left without a horse when his colt wasn't entered. He may switch to King's Song. Calumet trainer Jimmy Jones decided mat Beau Prince, win terbook favorite for the Ken tucky Derby, wasn't ready for a stern test like the Flamingo. Three Florida Invaders are favored in a 12-home field slated to go to the post In the Fair Ground $50,000 New Orleans Handicap. Greek Star, All Hands and Nobel Sel, will take on New Orleans horses like Tenacious, Road House, Pete's Folly, Santiago, Tony Graff, Sutler, King of Kentucky, Con's Boy and Golden Circle.
