The Empress of Song Cleo Laine is an English singer who performed in this country for the first time in 1972 and for the first time in Detroit last fall. In that short time, she has come to be regarded by jazz critics as the empress of song. Some call her the greatest all-round singer in the world. Her voice is an instrument which ranges from a sensually dark and breathy quality to the highest note on a soprano saxophone as she covers jazz, blues, and even Shakespearean Sonnet. (She doesn't recite them, she sings them.) Accompanied by her husband, John Dankworth, one of England's top alto saxophonists, and his orchestra, Cleo will perform at the Music Hall this Tuesday through Thursday, Nov.

Harvested and exported just before the first frost, truffles are a rare, underground fungus highly esteemed by gourmets. Commonly inserted in roasts, because the pungent flavor of truffles permeates the entire piece of meat, farmers find "black diamonds" by using pigs and dogs specially trained to sniff them out. (These must be the most expensively trained of all animals, since they are entitled to eat every sixth truffle they root out.)
