"We'll have terrific first-run programming from Paramount, and we'll maintain our relationship with the Pistons and the Red Wings," Kell said Tuesday, discussing the station's announcement this week that it will serve as the Detroit outlet for the new United Paramount Network being launched in January. "There was probably always a chance" WKBD might become CBS's new local affiliate, Kell said. But because Paramount Communi- cations Inc. owns WKBD, that chance faded quickly once Paramount made a "firm commitment to move forward with the United Paramount Network." Paramount's attempt to start its own Fox-style "fifth network" will begin in January with two nights of programming, 8-10 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays, with "Star Trek: Voyager" as the high-profile series anchor of the fledgling lineup.

Meanwhile, WKBD will have the advantage of much greater schedule flexibility once the seven-night Fox lineup switches over to WJBK-TV, Channel 2, sometime this fall, Kell said. Because WKBD will no longer have to worry about preempting and rescheduling so many Fox programs, the station has a slate of 76 Pistons and Red Wing games scheduled for prime time between October and April. Previously, the station frequently has had to schedule games outside of prime time to avoid bumping too many Fox shows. "We have a 30-year relationship with the Pistons and Red Wings," Kell said. "That's an important part of who we are in this town, and who we'll continue to be." During the time that WKBD still carries Fox, it will have the benefit of being the local outlet for Detroit Lions football during at least part of the regular NFL season.

"That won't hurt," Kell admitted. "But whether Fox is with us for another three weeks or another three months, that's not really important to us."
