(Snap swivel) .10 Ammunition, Factory Load, 50 3.60 mps i Wat in Stretch I Favorites Falter I in Derby Warmup NEW YORK (U.R) Bastogne, named after the city in Belgium which proved a stumbling block to the Germans in the Battle of the Bulge, proved a stumbling block to Blue Border and Stepfather in the first division of the Experimental Handicap at Jamaica. The son of Sky Raider sprinted to a half length victory in the six furlong stake with Jaclyn Stable's I Will second and Brookmeade Stable's Peace Harbor third. The best the $200,000 Stepfather could do was finish fourth of Greentree Stable's Blue 'Border. Jobstown was sixth with 'Miss Kimo, Khyber Pass and Famestown completing the field. MISS KIMO, the only filly in the field of nine derby candidates, was the first to show in front when the three-year-olds were sent under way.

The fleet daughter of Hash, who was coupled in the running with Jobstown, showed the way down the backstretch and around the turn but when the field hit the head of the stretch, Bastogne and I Will were locked in a head and head duel for the lead. Showing remarkable improvement over his last start on opening day, when he finished third behind Cornish Knight and Brab-ancon, Bastogne slowly drew away from the speedy I Will. BUT LIKE ASSAULT who won the first division of the experi mental in 1946 although he later proved good enough to win the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Bastogne failed to make the same impression on the crowd of 32,769 attracted to the Long Island oval by the derby candidates. The big horse was Stepfather, who ran last almost half the way and then closed like a whirlwind in the stretch, driving between horses to finish fourth. Stepfather, for whom Harry Warner paid the $200,000 at the Louis B.

Mayer dispersal sales, left the impression that he will show to better advantage if he goes to the post in the mile and a sixteenth section of the experimental next Saturday. BLUE BORDER, who racad for the Bradley Stable last season and then joined Greentree Stable when the Bradley holdings were sold, didn't have it. Last season, when he was rated one of the better juveniles, his forte was speed. He set a track record for six furlongs in the Grand Union Hotel Stakes and equaled the six and a half furlong mark in the Hopeful. But although only about two lengths from the front at the head of the stretch he didn't have the kick to improve his position.

Jockey Eric Guerin rode Bastogne and drove him over the course in 1:12 over a fast track to pick up a purse worth $10,950. In 21 races last year he earned only $14,995. BASTOGNE, which raced coupled with Khyber Pass, as the C. V. Whitney Entry, paid $18.30, $7.50 and $6.30 while I Will returned $4.10 and $3.90 and Peace Harbor $7.00.

EXEMPT FROM qualifying play are the 30 low scorers of last year's tournament, all former National Open champions, members of the 1947 U. S. These will be joined by approximately 130 survivors of the qualifying tests for the 47th open championship to be held at the St.

The number of qualifiers' places in each section based on the size and quality of the field will be determined after the entries close May 20. QUALIFYING ROUNDS will be 36 holes of stroke play, while the championship will be 72 holes, as usual.
