REVALUATION 60')! Governor McLeod takes exception to I the statement of Spartanburg members of the Legislature that he assisted in the de feat of the revaluation program The Governor and Speaker Brown the House of Representatives according to lhe reports used their personal influ ence to kill the bill because it would be a reflection uj)6n them and would amount to discrediting the administration Of botl the Governor and the Speaker In a letter to the 'Greenville News the governor calls attention to the fact that in his message he recommended revalua tion for purposes of equalization and that he had always stood by that recommen dation He points out that he means valuation for equalization in contradistinc tion to revaluation for the' purpose ol and declares that he "will again recommend to the General Assembly revaluation program based on the same principles as set forth in his former mes sage Jn discussing the letter The South Carolina Gazette says is rather cr a line distinction the Governor has drawn The purpose of all taxation is or should be the raising of revenues ami only that Unlike the tariff there is dr should be no reason for a schedule of taxation which gives to one class an ad vantage at the expense of another class In South Carolina assuredly we would not impose a tax except for purposes of revenuestricjly stopping there and going not one whit? farther We have no class es tq (fayor and none to punish through taxation: the 'text's weare assessed are for revenue only to carry on the op erations of gpvcrnment there is all the more and the stronger reason why these taxes should equalized and made fair and just so that no one class will be iav: ored at the expense of another class of KTJ In this connection it is interesting to note that Senator Biease while strong flor a lair and equitable revaluation of property declares the revaluation sljduld not bemade by the State Tax com mission but by the proper constituted authorities of each county This is in line with Senator well known ad vocacy of strictly local self government The Senator's idea will no doubt find ap proval in most of the counties of the state The argument that the various local boards would be in a better position to adjudge the value of their own county lands is sound but the trouble will be in being sure that the boards consist of men whose judgment of values is good It is so often the easy that men are appointed to olfice without any regard whatever tor their peculiar fitness for the job Whatever plan is provided for revalua tion it is certain that the next legislatuie will take some (step to bring it about The idea sceme(i new to the members of the last legislature It did not come up until late in the session and the solons were too busy trying to raise money then to attend to any real constructive business (EbUblie hfd May 18 1922) THE LORENCE DAILY TIMES (Ertablkhed 1894) nmm1 1 South to do what course shall she take where LORENCE PRUTTING CO Publishers jo hej jnlcrusts jeS) What is due to happen to her?
