The four eaglets were brought to Alabama earlier this month, but one died of the lung infection within two days and a second became ill with a similar infection, wildlife officials said. Joe Meyers, a non-game wildlife coordinator of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, said Thursday the second bird was returned to an area near Guntersville after receiving antibiotics for two weeks. "She's doing very well at this point and we think she's completely out of danger," Meyers said.

The four 8-week-old eagles two males and two females were flown to the Mud Creek area of The Associated Press Jackson County on April 2 as part of the eagle restoration program. "This respiratory infection frequently affects birds that are kept in captivity," Meyers said. "'The stress the bird experienced when it was flown into the state could have also contributed to its death." Conservationists eventually hope to introduce 100 of the birds in Alabama during the next 10 years. All four eagles were placed near Scottsboro in a hacking tower two 5-foot-tall cages atop a 35-foot tower near Mud Creek and were to be freed two weeks later. Each cage contained an ample supply of water and branches to simulate as much as possible their natural surroundings.

But one of the birds died within 48 hours, Meyers said. The eagles were originally hatched from eggs taken from a nest in Florida last year and were sent to the Sutton Avian Research Center in Oklahoma, Meyers said.
