(1971) Today's Television Programs BY BETTELOU PETERSON Free Prs TV-Radi Writer The geniuses who bring you "All in the Family," "Maude," "Sanford and Son" and "Good Times" have done It again in "The Jeffersons," the new CBS series which makes its bow at 8:30 p.m.

Saturday on CBS, following "Family." That's exactly the place for the show because the Jeffersons started out as neighbors of Archie and Edith Bunker in Queens. But George Jefferson's dry cleaning business has burgeoned and now he, wife Louisa and son Lionel have moved up and uptown, to the high-rent high-rises of New York's East Side. Tliere is a marvelous crop of characters their new neighborhood, all them adept at one line jokes in the best "Maude," "Family," "Good Times" style. Which gives rise to the only real dissent about the new show: It would be nice if some lines could be delivered as a quiet nudge in the ribs instead of a slam over the head. The crux of the first show is that George wants Louise to hire a maid and Louise doesn't want to do it She's made friends with a maid who works in the building and she thinks it would be an insult to her new friend.

Among the laughs, some points are made about changing relationships. There its one entirely serious moment in which guilt over uncharitable feelings is discussed. Even the most cliched characters Jefferson's acid mother, the quirky British neighbor manage to come off funny and fresh. The experts say that good TV writers are in short supply, but Norman Lear and company who turn out "The Jeffersons," "Family," "Maude" et al come up with a continuing supply. "You're too short to be a basketball player and too old to be a rock'n' roll singer." A pause: "You must be a numbers runner." The Jeffersons are played, as they were in "All in th Family," by Isabel Sanford and Sherman Hemsley, with Mikt Evans as their son Lionel. THE GENIUSES at ABC have done it again, too: They've come up with a real dog of a show. Caught in the mess is Robert Blake, an actor who might make something of a series, given a decent chance. The show, "Baretta," starts at 10 p.m. Friday.

It can't be called new because it is a reworking of "Toma," one of last season's successes. Tony Musante starred in several 90-minute "Tomas" which were based on a real New Jersey cop who used disguises. Musante didn't want to do 'Toma" weekly so ABC shelved the idea. In the scramble to find something anything to replace the dismal failures of last fall, the project was reactivated. Blake replaced Musante; the name was changed to "Baretta" and the character to that of an "undercover cop," or so says ABC.

In the premiere Baretta is after the biggies in the numbers racket. But along the way a incompetent colleague blows his cover and then his girl is gunned down by a hit man hired to kill Baretta. Revenge becomes all. From then on, Baretta rampages through town behaving so grossly that any reality much less any sense is entirely lost. Even as fiction, a police department with no control over the antics of a cop like Baretta is horrifying.

Back to School NEW YORK (UPI) -Stage and screen star Howard Da Silva will join the Queens-borough Community College professional theatre in residence for the coming season and will play the leading role in Bertold Brecht's "The Caucasian Chalk Circle," opening Jan. 31. Da Silva, who portrayed Ben Franklin in both the stage and screen versions of "1776," is celebrating his 45th year in the theater. Cincy Season CINCINNATI (UPI) -The Cincinnati Opera, the nation's second oldest, has announced a June 18-July 26 season of six productions, including Wagner's "Flying Dutchman," the first Wagnerian presentation by the company since 1961.
