And it's possible the unwieldy group was the lesser of two evils when WFL Commissioner Gary Davidson found himself faced with the choice of awarding the franchise to it or to Hucul, whose previous attempts at business had resulted in 30 arrests and 27 law suits, filed by banks, newspapers, auto rental companies, jewelers, clothiers and building and supply firms. Hucul's police record stemmed mainly from bad checks or accepting money in advance for work that was never done. His longest sentence was 90 days. Hucul contacted Davidson last summer and says the commissioner told him he could have the Detroit franchise.

But while Hucul was rounding up backers, another group, headed by attorney Erwin Zie-gelman, was about to enter the picture. Last November Ziegd man's group contacted Davidson and convinced him they, not Hucul, should get the franchise. Davidson told them to include Hucul in their group and on Dec. 5, three days after Hucul's 35th birthday, Ziegelman signed a document promising Hucul a three percent ownership in the team, a $35,000 a year job with the team, $5,000 reimbursement for expenses and a voice in the operation. The document stated the contract was contingent upon the award of the franchise to "a group of investors which will include Arnold Y.

Aranoff." Arnold Y. Aranoff is vice-president of the Edward C. Levy a Detroit-based manufacturer of construction materials. When Edward J. Robinson announced eight days later that Detroit would field a team in the new league, he mentioned Aranoff as one of the owners, a statement that, brought an immediate denial from a spokesman for Aranoff.

Davidson was apparently surprised at Aranoff pullout. On Jan. 7 he sent a letter to Jod Resnick, who at the time was serving as the club's attorney; "Obviously, Arnold is the main strength in your group," Davidson wrote, "and without him we would not have agreed to accept your group as applicants for WFL membersirj." "I have never invested one dime in the Detroit Wheels," Aranoff said on Oct. 1. "I was one of several people approached." Aranoff name never again was mentioned in connection with the Wheels, except when Hucul filed suit, a case that is still unresolved.

Robinson, a former state senator, set the pattern for recurring faux pas that were to plague the owners throughout their tenure, when he told the press conference last Dec. 13: "We don't want to rule out Eastern (Michigan University) as a playing site for our team but I would think it would be one of our last alternatives." As it turned out there was no alternative. On March 6 Louis Lee, who had succeeded Robinson as president of the club, announced the Wheels would play at EMU. Henderson walked to a lobby pay phone and tried to get hold of Davidson across the continent in Long Beach, but he wasn't in the office. So Henderson told the players they might as well get on the bus for Downing Stadium, what the hell. When you are a pro football player who is not Csonka or Kiick or Warfield or O.J., the idea is just to hang in the game, to stay in uniform as long as you can. Play for anybody with a ball until they actually take that ball away and send you off to sell insurance. The Wheels got on the bus.

Who were the Wheels? No one you ever heard of. At least the Stars had a few names once spoken by Howard Cosell on the game of the week Sauer, Dowr-ing. Ike Thomas. Highsmith, Gla-dieux, Voss, St. Jean.

It is 15 minutes to game time. Out "on the Stars' 30-yard line, Detroit's Channel 4 sportscaster Jim Forney is standing with stud-, ied casualness in his brown doub-leknit suit and open, wide-wing shirt collar. Beside him is Nick Eddy, a square-jawed, darkly handsome granite block of a man who was a halfback for the Lions before being cut last year. Eddy is wearing a blue doubleknit suit and white shirt. Forney and Eddy are here to broadcast the game on Channel 50, a Detroit UHF television station.

Down the sidelines a way, a Marine Corps Reserve color guard is leaning on its rifles and sipping cans of Black Label. The Stars' cheerleaders, high school girls from Long Island and New Jersey, are practicing cartwheels on the faded red asphalt track that circles the field.

At each glimpse of yellow cotton cheerleader underwear, some beer-drunk men in the stands shout things the girls parents wouldn't want them to hear. Then an announcer comes on the public address system and says. "Ladies and gentlemen, for your pte-game amazement, the Yale University Precision Band!
