Leap Year -'Kids' Can Blame Caesar About 170 babies will be born in Detroit Wednesday, and by their third or fourth birthdays, they will hate Julius THE REASON for the anticipated increase is the fact that the building and home construction industries are undertaking a nation-wide home improvement campaign on an unprecedented scale. In turn this will be tied in with local community and civic programs to fight blight and encourage neighborhood rehabilitation. The campaign got its official send-off on Jan. 16 when Administrator Albert M.

Cole, of the Housing and Home Finance Agency proclaimed 1956 as Home Improvement Year. Designated name for the campaign is Operation Home Aivning Enhances Patio Summer's coming and the covered terrace will soon be the most popular spot around the house for the family which has one. The covered terrace or patio has become one of the really big items in the home improvement field around Detroit. Contractors report that within a week or two of th? installation of a patio awning in a particular neighborhood there is almost always another job in the same block. "NEIGHBORS SEE how much that shaded patio adds to the livability of the house and decide to have one at their own home," one contractor explained.

Manufacturers are putting out porch and patio covers in three basic materials: aluminum, plastic and canvas. Aside from providing a cool, shady spot for lounging, the patio awning protects terrace furniture from fading in the sim. It also offers protection from showers. A porch such as the one shown in the photo above features an awning designed to accent the long, low look of today's ranch house. The small white scallop is designed to give the awning "feminine appeal" and, is referred to in the trade as the "petticoat." The number of loans was 543,836. On the basis of data released by FHA Commissioner Norman P. Mason, the volume of FHA insured home improvement loans nationally, over a 20-year period, is nearly 9 billion. The number is 19 million. The operation is entirely self-supporting, since FHA charges a small sum for its insuring service.

The charge also provides insurance reserves which now approximate $67 million for home improvement operations.
