DRIVE-INS INS 1 IEBELTAIREI BY SUSAN STARK tem forms Film Cr ltic "Dog Day Afternoon" were not known to be based on the facts of a bank robbery that occurred in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Aug. 22, 1972, viewers of the movie would be well justified in judging the film ac bizarre and sensationalistic, maybe even as warped.

But the strange, disturbing drama documented in the film actually did occur, proving once again the old saw about truth and fiction. ON A sweltering afternoon three summers ago, a small branch of the Brooklyn Savings Bank was held up by two men who demanded, for the safe return of the eight bank employes held as hostages, transportation to the airport and a jet to take them to Algeria. Beginning as suspense drama, the film that addresses itself to the Brooklyn bank robbery shifts gears soon after its expository section and becomes, until its closing moments, a revealing and deeply disturbing psychological drama. Al Pacino, as the leader of the twosome behind the robbery, emerges during the course of the proceedings as a man who has been worked over by many influences parental, institutional, social and who has been unable to integrate any of those Wittences within his personality. He is a little bit of a mama's boy, a little bit of a Catholic, a little bit of a middle-class husband with two youngsters, and Il a little bit of a ornesexual with a lover who desires an operation to change his sex.

Anti-social, but not reckless.
