I BY CARL ARRINGTON Pm Press Staff Writer , At first It looks like the "Soul Train" dancers have - fpmistakenly wandered into the rumbling track of a roller - derby just as the Kansas City t Bomber is about to deliver a lethal body slam. Soon it be: comes clear that this is no mistake, but a television show. ' They call it "Rolling Funk." t This startling mixture of soul. sound and skating can be 'J seen every Saturday at 6:30 l p.m. on Channel 62, Detroit's i new black-owned TV station. IMAGINE Tina Turner whizzing across the stage with : de: Ikettes on eight little : i wlieels and you get an idea of - : tie :action in "Rolling Funk." The show is the creation of Larry Moore, Charles Newsome and Leonard Johnson, all partners in a local videotape company. Their black-owned enterprise, Mobile Video Tape (MVT), has also been active in taping local gospel shows and special events, and it hopes to sell a series of syndicated shows on a national basis. Negotiations are already under way by M V T to telecast "Rolling Funk"the first of its kind in the U.S.in cities like Los Angeles, Flint, Cleveland, Toledo and Chicago. Larry Moore, the host, director and co-producer of "Rolling Funk," said, "We got the idea when we saw the chance to capitalize on something that blacks have been hip to for a long time. "We knew we had a winner when we discovered all of the local talent and found out how big funky skating is in Detroit. For the first taping in June we invited about 40 kids and nearly 300 showed up." While there are no ratings available on the new show, George White, WGPR program director, said, "We have been pleased by the response so far. We have already received more than 100 letters from people who want to be on the show.' , . THE PROGRAM is rehearsed and taped at the Safari Roller, Skating Rink, 3415 Middlebelt in Inkster. Moore said that because of the show the rink has become the hottest disco-track in the area. Dozens of independent skaters circling the huge rink pose logistical challenges for the director trying to create a progrdm format. Moore said, "We had to worry about sound, lighting and trying to make it look like the kids are having fun and full of energy' after skating under the hot TV lights for a couple of hours." , The result is that it takes more than two hours of taping to yield each half-hour program. Most breakneck falls and embarrassing mistakes are edited out. Excluding the skaters: it also requires a crew of about 30 people to produce "Rolling Funk." Future shows will even feature shots from a cameraman on skates. The skaters clearly like the idea of having a showcase for their skills, which range from solo variations of shooting-theduck (a skater crouches down with one leg extended like a cannon) to a line of dozens of skaters forming the weekly "Roller Road." As Moore says: "Anything you ëan do on your feet you can do on skatesand a lot more." The producers also have plans or extensive skating contests to choose THE best soul skater in Motown. Of course there is nothing new about skating to music on or off camera. It's just that the oom-pah-pah organ rendition of "Moon River" has given way to the downbeat sound of James Brown, Rufus and the Spinners. Music for the show- is provided by records and a guest artist. This weekend "Rolling Funk" will feature the "Main Ingredients." Moore said they are confident that they can convince top acts like Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin and others to appear on the pro gram when they are in town. MVT also has plans for expanding their idea beyond the narrow scope of the television screen. Moore said they would like to start franchising "Funky Roller Rinks" and sell T-shirts. They are even working on "a foot powder for your funky feet." On the set, when Moore shouts "ACTION," the sounds of Gladys Knight and the Pips mix with the thunder of a bundred skates as the couples hustle, penguin and bump their way around the hardwood floors. Motown, the city that put the world on wheels, has now given soul a new roll. EVER:070E: ic?
