l' 'Say a yy sj syss isjimihiss IN U3. CANADA MARKET Race Results, Entries at Leading Tracks Stanfel 'Shopping' BY BOB LATSHAW Richard A. Stanfel negotiates hia football contracts the same way he plays the game rough. FAN FARE" By Walt Ditzen 1 Saturday. April 24, 1854 DETROIT FREE PRESS Wood to Produce Favorite for Derby Correlation, Fisherman Clash In Final Eastern Classic Prep NEW YORK HP) California-bred Correlation and Eastern-owned Fisherman, two of the strongest survivors of an injury-riddled crop of three-year-olds, meet Saturday in the Wood Memorial at Jamaica with some $86,000 and the role of Kentucky Derby favorite as the prize.

That's the way General Man-1 ager Nick Kerbawy described the San Francisco guard rumored on his way to the Calgary Club In i the Canadian Football League. Kerbawy said he talked with Stanfel when both were on the coast for the annual pro bowl game. "DICK TOLD ME what he ex pected to get for the 1954 sea-! son," Kerbawy said. "He also said that scouts from the Canadian League were In touch with him. "I told him what we could pay, but the offer was not a final ultimatum.

Later Presl- 1 dent Edwin Anderson was In San Francisco and talked with i Stanfel. "We haven't sent any con-1 tracts out yet, but they normally go Into the mail in May. There may be a slight delay because of the big rush of work caused by the tax refunds. Stanfel has been reportedly offered about 20 per cent more than his Lions' salary by the Calgary Club. ALTHOUGH SALARY figures are not disclosed, a good estimate of Stanf el's salary would be around the $7,000 mark for the 12 league games.

He also received $2,400 for his share of the championship game and an additional game salary for the All Star game, roughly about $600. The fact that Stanfel Is Interested In Canadian League offers comes as no surprise to Kerbawy or the Lions' front office. He has always been a rough negotiator in the past. He's advised in most of his activities by two brothers. He haggled last year before signing.

Undoubtedly he'll haggle some more this year either with the Lions or Calgary. POPLIN Jamaica Results FIRST Six furlonxx: Naval Affairs Kidman 20.6 10.70 S.10 Bounce Hark (Mann) iiH.DO 14.40 Dark Priiio Schmidt) .1.80 Time 1:14. dohn Barleyenro, Some Vamp, Vala Vixen. Bolt? Tolty. Shake.

Palm Tree was to have been a running mate for Maharajah, another Derby eligible, but Maharajah Injured a knee during a workout Friday morning, and Trainer John Gaver declared him out of the Wood and Derby. Correlation, from Robert S.

Lytle's stable. Is the 2-1 favorite in the Derby future book, but he probably will go to the post Saturday as second choice to C. V. Whitney's Fisherman. The tiny Whitney colt impressed New York fans laet week when he ran away from a field that included four of Saturday's rivals to win the Gotham Stakes on a soft, sloppy track.

Fisherman will be ridden, as usual, by Headley Woodhouse. WILLIE SHOEMAKER, champion jockey of 1953, who rode Correlation to a victory over Goyamo in the Florida Derby, again will pilot him Saturday. Correlation was scratched from the Gotham, but worked impressively in the rain between races. Fisherman and Correlation met last year in the East View Stakes, when Fisherman led all the way to win. Of the others, High Gun and Next Page appear to have the best prospects of causing an upset.

High Gun, a disappointment in his first three-year-old race, has been training well. But seven of the eight entries are Derby eligibles, and for most of them the prospects of a trip to Louisville depend upon Saturday's showing.
