Entries for Championships This Week Show Big Increase Over Last Year's. Loss by Northwestern of its star Negro half miler, Jaydell Thompson through scholastic difficulties and the uncompromising battle between Malcolm Weaver, Colt track coach, Frank Hermanson, Redford mentor in the matter of reducing their entries for the city meet Friday and Saturday at Codd field marked the drawing of preliminary heats at a coaches meeting yesterday. In order to keep the preliminary heats in the dashes and hurdles down to a minimum, it was necessary that several entries be scratched, the number entered being as high as 16 in a single event over that for the 1928 meet And it was then that Weaver and Hermanson, whose teams are favored to place one-two, proved stubborn and let the other coaches make their withdrawals before even considering dropping one of their entries. None who had the slightest cfcsnce of placing were deprived of a place in the meet, however. Repetition of Mid-West Meet For the most part, the struggle for honors will be waged between those who participated in the Mid-West meet at Ann Arbor last Saturday, won easily by Northwestern.

One hundred and ten represented 11 Detroit schools in that meet and approximately twice that number are entered for the city meet In most cases, the additional entries are being made by the coaches to give them experience rather than any hope that they will figure in Jhe point scoring. Southwestern, which didn't have any in the Mid-West meet and Northern show large mrrwi.wB In the noint of entries 4 while Cooley, which hasn't had a foam in competition this year, win )e represented by a lone sprinter, Kdwards, in the 100. Burgess Put In Sprints. Thompson, an easy winner at Ann Arbor, was counted on for first here but now Guy who was third, finishing right behind Kahler of Redford, is expected to have it out with the Huskies' star for first Another important change In Northwestern's entry was the shifting of Burgess to the 100 and 220. He has been running the 440 regularly this year, but lacked finishing power and Coach Weaver figures he should go better In the shorter races.

Preliminaries have been set for Friday at 3 o'clock at Codd field, the field events starting one hour earlier. Finals on Saturday start at the same time. STARS LOSETHIRD GAME TO MEMPHIS Visitors Pound Two Pitchers and Win, 11-4. Memphis hammered two Detroit Stars pitchers bard to win the third game of the series yesterday, 11 to The Southerners pounded out 15 hits for a total of 28 bases. Mitchell started on the mound for the locals but was chased to the showers in the third, Davis taking his place.

Davis pitched good enough to hold the visitors in check but his supporting cast contributed even errors toward his downfall. Kenyon. formerly of the Detroit pitching staff, held the Stars safe over the route, yielding seven scattered hits and was never in danger. MKMIHIS DETROIT. AR II A AH A if i a Jn.
