IUM1.WI wwnnnuu-Mil ooph NCAA torunament committee is committed to select the nine best at-large teams, regardless of region, then fit them into the regional tournaments. Because the East has so many teams under consideration, it's likely at least one, probably South Carolina, will be moved to the Midwest especially if St. John's elects to go to the National Invitation Tournament rather than accept the NCAA bid as has been widely speculated. With Notre Dame and Marquette being the top-ranked teams available, the NCAA likely will leave both in the Mideast. NCAA first-round sites include Mideast at Indiana State, Midwest at North Texas State and West at Idaho State.

Five East sites (St. John's, Philadelphia's Palestra, Princeton, West Virginia, William Mary) are under consideration for the three first-round games in that region. First-round winners will advance to the regional tournaments March 14 and 16 at North Carolina State (East), Alabama (Mideast), Oral Roberts (Midwest) and Arizona (West). THE FOUR regional champions will advance to the March 23 and 25 finals at Greensboro, N.C.t where the University of North Carolina will serve as host. Incidentally, should UCLA and North Carolina State gain KANSAS CITY (UPI) No.

The NCAA torunament committee will issue invitations to nine at-large schools Thursday morning to fill the NCAA's 25-team tournament. The other 16 teams will be conference champions. While Notre Dame and Marquette appear headed for the Mideast regional at Indiana State, it's quite possible an eastern team will fill one of the three Midwest regional at-large berths and another could go to the West regional.

HERE'S A RUNDOWN of at-large teams under consideration for the NCAA tournament: East Pittsburgh, Providence, South Carolina, St. John's (N.Y.), Massachusetts, Boston College, Maryland-Eastern Shore. Mideast Notre Dame, Marquette, Jacksonville. Midwest Creighton, Oral Roberts, Cincinnati. West Hawaii.

Three at-large teams will fill the East regional, two will be in the Mideast, three in the Midwest and one in the West.
