"Brent may never be a Gale Sayers but he is a really good running back by NFL standards," Mertes said.

McClanahan came to the Northland as a fifth-round draft choice from Arizona Slate, where he was all-conference and rushed for 992 yards his senior year. After working for one of the toughest collegiate coaches in Frank Kush and one of the most awesome pro coaches in Grant, McClanahan has decided the difference between the two games is in terms of the mental and physical. "Kush was a good coach, a tough disciplinarian," he said. "If you made a mistake you would run alone against the defense over and over. "Pro football is more of a mental game.

If you make a mistake Grant will say something right to the point that can hurt just as much. Both expect the most out of their football players." Over the hurdle of those first rocky years, McClanahan is looking ahead to owning a ranch some day near his home base in Bakersfield, and working with children. He's come a long way from the ambitious, but misguided would-be talent of 1973. He knows who he is. FOOTBALL LOOM I NGTON, Minn.

(UPI) The nature of his job brings him into comparison with established giants like Gale Sayers and Jim Brown, and he comes off like a workhorse in a field of thoroughbreds. But. Brent McClanahan, a third-year running back for the Minnesota Vikings who took two years to set his head on straight, has earned his berth in the select ranks of pro football. Ask him, ask his coaches, they'll say he's a pro. "Throw out my first year when I didn't play well," McClanahan, 24, said.

"And I needed my second year to get adjusted. Now I have confidence. I feel I belong." To get he overcame personal problems in 1973 and saw just enough action in 1974 to get his first professional touchdown and return 23 kick-offs for 549 yards and a 23.9 average, 10th in the NFC. Earlier this season he admitted he "didn't think they'd keep me around after last year." COACH BUD GRANT apparently knew better. "He's always had the ability, the bravery if you will, and the intelligence," Grant said after McClanahan's fine performance against San Francisco in the Vikings' season opener.

(AP) A former defensive back may be Texas top long-distance threat against Oklahoma in Saturday's game between the two unbeaten and highly-ranked teams at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Alfred Jackson, a sopho-m split receiver, has grabford passes for Ifil yards, including a scoring strike last, week against Utah State, and he has gained 43 yards on three reverses, including a scoring dash against Colorado State. Last year, as a defensive cornerback, Jackson intercepted three passes and gave an indication of his breakaway potential by sprinting 90 yards for a touchdown on a kickoff return against Texas Christian. JACKSON was moved to wide receiver in spring training, and offensive co-ordinator Don Breaux said he made some catches in workouts that were as good as Breaux, a former college and professional quarterback, had ever seen in college or pro ball.

Jackson is tied for fourth among the leading receivers in the Southwest Conference this season, an unusual distinction for a Longhorn since Texas depends so heavily on its running attack, which leads the nation with an average of 395 yards a game. "Alfred has very good hands his hands are big," says receiver coach Prenis Williams. "He is plenty big enough 6-foot-l and 184 pounds) and has excellent speed. I think Alfred will continue to improve as he plays more and more types of defenses and in more different game situations." I think it's fantastic having played defensive back," says Jackson. "It has to give me an edge.

I kind of know what the defender is thinking in certain situations and therefore what might work against him." Jackson's roommate, quarterback Marty Akins, has overthrown Jackson on a couple of long heaves this year, but he promises, "Alfred and me, we're going to start completing some of these long passes one of these days." Tennessee Speed way Aimed at '77 NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Racing officials planning a mile-long superspeedway here hope the track can be ready for the 1977 sea.son. The $3.5 million track would be a miniature of the Daytona International Speedway. Plans for the track were announced two years ago but construction has been delayed because of increasing interest rates. The track is being financed by the same group that owns the five-eights mile Nashville Speedway.

No date for the start of construction has been set but officials will meet soon to work out details. ACC Honors GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) Freshman running back Ted Brown of North Carolina was named Atlantic Coast Conference rookae of the week Tuesday for his performance in his first varsity starting assignment against Indiana last Saturday. (AP)-Howard (Doc) Edwards, who led the Midland (Tex.) Cubs to the Texas League western division championship this year, has been named manager of the Wichita Aeros. Edwards replaces Mike Roarke, who becomes the Chicago Cubs' minor league pitching coach. Knieks Cul 3 NEW YORK (AP) The New York Knicks cut forward Elnardo Webster, center Aul-cie Perry and guard Milt Williams Tuesday, trimming their squad to 15. ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) Two challenge matches featuring Jimmy Connors will be played in Las Vegas within the next four months, it was learned Tuesday.

Connors will team with Chris Evert to play a mixed doubles match against Billy Jean King and Marty Rissen at Caesar's Palace Dec. 6. On Feb. 28, Connors will meet either Manuel Orantes of Spain or Vitas Gerulaitas in a challenge match that could net Connors up to $750,000. The Rochester Democrat-Chronicle reported that Connors' manager, Bill Riordan, said Connors will get a guarantee and the winner will get $250,000.

The loser will get a percentage of the gate. "He's the kind of guy you see two or three days in practice and you know he's a football player." Grant started McClanahan in the backfield this year when Chuck Foreman was sidelined with a knee injury. McClanahan, a 5-foot-10 202-pounder, responded with impressive statistics that included a touchdown pass from Fran Tarkenton, an end-zone thriller against the 49ersthat endeared him to Vikings Ian j. McClanahan has amassed 150 yards in 35 carries to lead the team in rushing, caught seven passes for 81 yards and returned four kickoffs for 103 yards, again to lead the Vikings. Always driving for the goal line, scrabbling for that extra yard, McClanahan is an exciting player to watch.

"He's a hitter he can run, catch and block in other words he's a pro football player," Grant said. McClanahan says he'll get yardage any way he can. "Charge, cut, I'd even crawl. I'll do anything I have to to help this team, run back kicks, block, wait on the sidelines, anything." BACKFIELD COACH Bus Mertes says McClanahan has real weaknesses, citing qualities like dependability, "It will be the biggest payday in the history of tennis, actually the biggest payday anywhere in sports history outside of boxing," Riordan said. The 23-year-old Connors lost to Orantes in three straight sets for the U.S.

Open title at Forest Hills. Prior to that, Connors had defeated Orantes six straight times. Gerulaitis, a native New Yorker, lost to Connors in this year's indoor championships in five sets. "CONNORS IS ranked No. 1 by the tennis computers, but off his recent performances I would have to rank Orantes as about equal to Connors," Riordan said.

"I remember him erback to make the big plays, the third and seven plays, and I haven't. I'm getting paid an awful lot of money to do it. I know I'm capable, but it takes four quarters to play this game. I just can't put my finger on it." Bartkowski remains quite confident, however, of his ability. "I'm ready to handle whatever comes up," he said.

"I've settled down quite a bit since the opener and know what has to be done. I won't be pleased until we go 14-0 but a 12-2 record will get us into the playoffs," he said with a smile. ALTHOUGH Bartkowski may have some minor doubts about his play so far, no one else has. "He's really going to be something," said Saint coach John North after the New Orleans game. Don Coryell of St.

Louis echoed North: "He's going to be around a long, long time. He really fires the ball and stands in the pocket without flinching." Bartkowski, who hit on 182 of 325 passes for 2,580 yards and 12 touchdowns his senior year in college, has set three goals for himself this year. "I want to throw over 50 percent completions with less than one interception a game," he said. "That's my goal. That, and winning.

If I can do those, we should win." 268-0810 78 C78x14 E78x14 F78.U MM Bartkowski Upset Over His Play South and Southwest Emory 4 Henry 12 double-faulting to Jimmy In a key match three years ago, but he seems to have overcome that drawback. "His chances against Jimmy depend upon the type of surface they would play on. Orantes' chances are better on a slower surface." Riordan, who said ha has recently been named tennis advisor to CBS, said both of the matches will be televised CBS. Besides Connors, Riordan also manages Gerulaitis. Connors has won challenge matches against Australians Rod Laver and John New-combe.

U-M Guard Tim Davis Honored CHICAGO (AP) Middle guard Tim Davis of Michigan has been named the Big Ten defensive player of the week by the Associated Press for his performance in last Saturday's 31-7 victory over fifth-ranked Missouri. Davis, a 5-foot-10, 212-pound senior from Warren, Ohio, was the take-charge guy in the Wolverine defense, which limited Missouri to 132 yards rushing. Davis was credited with 12 tackles, nine of them solos including one for a loss. Also nominated for the award was defensive tackle Greg Schaum of Michigan State for his work in the 10-3 triumph over Notre Dame. Schaum was in on 15 tackles, two of them solos.

Minnesota was Hie only Big Ten team to post a shutout last week with a 21-0 decision over Ohio University and the Gophers did it with a tremendous team effort. Six different players made tackles for losses and three others recovered fumbles. George Washington was in on eight tackles while three of his teammates recorded seven each. "It feels good to win," said the 6-foot-4, 215-pound quarterback from California, "but I'm not happy at all over my play so far." The Falcons broke into the winning column Sunday with a 14-7 decision over New Orleans after narrow losses to St. Louis (23-20) and Detroit (17-14). BARTKOWSKI, a 22-year-old blond bomber known as "Peachtree Bart" in Atlanta, readily shoulders the blame for Atlanta's showing so far.

"I can make up a lot of excuses but there is no reason to throw a bad pass. Maybe I'm being too conservative, but I'm not coming up with the big play," said the 22-year-old who has hit on 26 of 61 passes for 314 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions so far. Bartkowski was referring to his second half showing in each contest. The Falcons have led in all three games entering the final period but have failed to score a point in the last IS minutes. "It's really quite simple." he said.
