Several new types of memories have been developed but they are inclined to get scrambled up when trucks go by and the floor quivers. The brain doesn't make much racket. Lights flicker around the control panel when it is doing its stuff and a horn groans to announce that the brain has come up with an answer. The brain does problems in a few minutes which would require weeks of labor by more ordinary means. The Wayne brain was built by Burroughs Corp.

It Is being revised constantly to make it faster and more agile. THE CAKE and feeding of a brain is an unusual occupation for a university, and expensive. The brain pays much of its own way in fees from companies which seek its favor. But it doesn't make enough to provide for the expenses of training men and women ti groom it and prepare its problems in a way that the brain can handle them. The university wants to spend $100,000 to wise it up some more and another for supplementary computing equipment.

So far not even the brain has figured out how to raise the money, but something will turn up. crystal rectifiers. It talks to itself through 20 miles of wire and four miles of coaxial cables. TIIE BRAIN can't really multiply. To do 58 times 76 it just adds up 76 a total of 58 times.

But it counts quickly. The answer comes out so fast that more time is spent printing answers than doing problems. So far no way has been worked out to carry on a chummy conversation with the brain. All its instructions are punched out on a tape, which is fed into the front end. The instructions are usually pretty complex, because the brain can't do anything except what it is told and it has to be told a lot.

The Wayne University electric brain can add one and one and decide which of two quantities is the larger. The university technicians admit this doesn't seem like an awful lot, but they argue that few humans can do much more, and not nearly so fast. "It can decide yes or no, says Arvld Jacobson, head of the university's computation laboratory. "This is quite a feat, when you stop to think about it." The electric brain has a long handle Unitized Digital Electronic Computer.

The Wayne brain one of he few that has been established without Government aid. It Mas financed by the university and co-operatmjr businesses and Industries. It has no time to play, around.

More than 30 Detroit industrial and commercial enterprises have been using UDEC for the last year to solve their p'roblems. UNIVE RSITY scientists have often called upon it to work out answers to their problems, too. UDEC has labored through formulas for the design of gears, finding out what i3 the best shape for gear teeth so that they will wear longer, and how deeply they should be cut. The brain has struggled through problems of bearing loading, and crankshaft design and the best way to manufacture cams. It has worked out problems on the passage of light through emulsions (remember smog?) and refraction in crystals.
