BY JACK SAYLOR Frea Press Sports Writer Shunting aside possibilities of an NFL player strike, Lion coach Rick Forzano looked back at the exhibition season, ahead to the regular season and pronounced his team ready. "Of course I'd rather have been 6-0 than 2-4, but I think we are ready for an opener," he said over coffee and rolls in the Pontiac Sheraton Monday morning.

Saying he was more concerned with preparing for the Sunday opener against Green Bay, Forzano said he has no inkling of what action the players might take about their stalled union contract negotiations. "I don't think anybody knows what the players will do, including the players themselves," the Lion coach said. "Anyway, it's nothing I can control, so I don't try." MEANWHILE, HE and general manager Russ Thomas worked at cutting the squad to the limit of poring over the waiver lists and seeking an llth-hour deal for a wide receiver to replace Larry Walton. Walton underwent knee surgery Monday and is sidelined for the season. As for the late unlamented exhibition campaign, Forzano echoed the sentiments of players, coaches and fans, too, with his feelings.

"It's too long," he said, not because of people getting hurt, but simply because it's too long. Six games that don't count are just too many." rom the top, the Lions are solidly in the corner for a change in format. "Bill Ford has advocated a 16 (regular season) and four (exhibitions) schedule for some time and a lot of others feel that way," Thomas pointed out. "I think there will be movement in that direction The owners meet in New York Tuesday and it certainly will be talked about." AT THE MOMENT, it will take 20 of 26 votes to affect a change. With the inclusion of Tampa and Seattle next year, it will take 21 of 28.

Forzano stakes his optimism for the season on his veteran-stocked defense, which seemed to get another trial Sunday, but Forzano warned, "he's gotta put it out of there to make it worthwhile carrying With John McMakin sidelined, Jim Hooks will be utilized as backup tight end, while tackle Craig Hertwig or guard Lynn Boden will work the short-yardage situations as the second tight end Cornerback Ben Davis will be available with a special cast on his broken wrist. Bill Munson should also be ready for emergency use and Ernie Price hasn't been ruled out, despite a bothersome knee. Jim Mitchell can play now, too. "He's OK," Forzano said, "it's just a matter of conditioning." Rashad Lost for the Season ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (UPI) The Buffalo Bills lost a fourth player for the season in their final weekend of exhibition football.

Starting wide receiver Ahmad Rashad underwent surgery for town ligaments or cartilages in his left knee Sunday and will miss the entire season, a team spokesman said. Saints Chop Former Lion NEW ORLEANS (AP) The New Orleans Saints Monday cut offensive tackle Rocky Rasley, a former Detroit Lion, and rookie wide receiver Frosty Anderson and placed linebacker Jim Mario on the injured reserve list, which means he is out for the rest of year. Colls Get 49ers Center Blue BALTIMORE (AP) The Baltimore Colts acquired All-Pro center Forrest Blue from the San rancisco 49ers Monday in exchange for an undisclosed future draft choice. Blue, 6-foot-5 and 26) pounds, was a No. 1 pick of the 49ers in 1968 following his graduation from Auburn.

Colls Drop Former Wolverine BALTIMORE (AP) Defensive tackle Steve Williams and rookie tight end Greg DenBoer were cut by the Baltimore Colts Monday as they reduced their roster to 44 players. Williams, a second-year player, started three games in 1974 and played in 12 of the 14. DenBoer was an eighth-round choice from Michigan. Pet. GB WEST FAST Pet.

Through the preseason, only Lem Barney, Charlie Weaver and Paul Naumoff started all six games at the same position and cohesion was lacking. "We played well in the second half and got the coordination we've been looking for," Forzano said. "Defense is 11 people working together, and our defense has to make big plays.

"Our defense, when this is all over, will be a good defensive team remember I said this," he added. "Our defense has to carry us." Out of the preseason juggling. Forzano has settled on Billy Howard to open at defensive end with Ken Sanders and Larry Hand to pair with Herb Orvis at tackles. Guard Bob Kowalkowski gave his knee a brief test at Cleveland and appears ready to start Sunday. Ray Jarvis replaces Walton at flanker and Denny Franklin, at split end, will be the lone rookie in the starting lineup.
