"Kotter" had to be renovated between the pilot film and the first show that got on the air.

ABC stations didn't like the students in the original version. They weren't quite the toughs that terrorize many urban schools but they weren't the nice young folks that adults prefer to fantasize as students. Several ABC stations decided not to carry the show including the Boston ABC affiliate, which decided after viewing the pilot that, in view of the troubled Boston school situation, where integration is a sore subject, it would be wiser to skip "Kotter." But it wasn't integration that bothered most objectors. It was the potential of "glorifying" disruptive students. No matter that the disruption may be shown to be wrong; if it is on TV, it is being "glorified." Then there were critics who found the present version of "Kotter" a corruption of what might have been a potentially powerful program coping with the real problems of education.

form of Ann Sheridan, a oames a. Micnener novel documenting the U.S. Navy's part in the Korean War is brought to life on the screen with realistic action sequences and absorbing personal drama. The story tells of a jet pilot called back to active duty and his assignment to provide air coverage for American ground forces. In family viewing time. And without an advisory (the message that tells viewers to send little kids and "sensitive" adults out of the room). The show was vetoed by ABC censors the first time it was proposed. Sex is family viewing time's biggest no-no. But pro-ducer Alan Sachs and executive producer James Komack fought hard and finally received the go-ahead.

After looking at a preview, it's hard to figure out what the problem was aside from network nervousness and the fact that the word "pregnant" is used. The show is as innocuous as a vanilla soda. The girl, Rosalie Totzie nicknamed Hotsie Totzie, of course has the reputation of being an easy mark. She's the one the boys date and then boast about how "far" they got. But how far did they get and how much is boasting? Rosalie decides she's had enough and comes up with the expected baby to make her point.

All of it is accomplished with generous use of smart cracks by the kids, some of them genuinely funny. The four young actors who play Kotter's students Robert Hegyes as Epstein, Lawrence-Hilton Jacobs as Washington, Ron Alillo as Horshack and John Travolta as Barbarino have their act down pat. They bounce the lines around with great timing. As Kotter, Gabriel Kaplan still is more stand-up comic than actor and the script has given him a couple of schticks to keep him comfortable. Debralee Scott does a nice bit as Rosalie.

THE SHOW HAS established a fairly solid audience in its first few weeks on the air. Kids in particular seem to have his family, he performs his duty with efficiency and honor.
