Much of his learning process, Rozema said, Involves discussions with other pitchers on the team and with the catchers. And he sounds enthusiastic about continuing that learning process with Clinton the rest of the season.

In this second half of the Midwest League's split season, the Tigers are just behind Southern Division leader Quad Cities. "We're right In the race this half," said Rozema. "We haven't been scoring many runs, but I think the hitting is going to come around the second half." Rozema said he hopes to play winter ball after this season. Mall brief resume to: State Manager, PO BOX 1 297, East Lansing, 48823. BY BRIAN BRAGG Fret Prtss Sports Wrlttr Eighteen-year-old David Rozema has been a professional baseball player for all of six months now, and he seems to be enjoying it immensely. Rozema, a righthanded fireballer for the Tigers' Clinton (Iowa) farm team, is among the pitching leaders in the Class A Midwest League. He celebrated his first half-year in pro ball last Monday with a 4-3 victory over Quad Cities, his fourth straight win, and he'll go after No. 5 in a row against Waterloo on Sunday.

Rozema, a Grand Rapids Central alumnus, worked mostly in long relief for Clinton the first few weeks of this season. He showed enough promise to convince manager Jim Leyland he should be a starter and that decision has paid off. ROZEMA is issuing less than two walks per nine innings of work. He strikes out more than three enemy hitters for every base on balls and he's allowing only about six hits a game. "I've been trying to spot my pitches fastballs on the inside corner or the outside corner," said Rozema.

"But tha coaches tell me it's not too good to be doing that for my age. They don't want you to try to spot it." "I throw about three-fourths fastballs, and the rest curves or sliders. "I'm working on the slider right now. I just learned how to throw it this year, and it's a good pitch. It looks like a fastball except it breaks down.

I use it when I need a strikeout or a double-play ball." THE 6-FOOT-4, 190-pound Rozema was signed by Tiger scout Bob Sullivan last January after being picked in the fourth round of the secondary phase of the player draft (for prospects who had been drafted earlier). Rozema had been chosen by the San Francisco Giants in the primary phase a year ago after 11-3 and 11-4 marks his last two seasons at Grand Rapids Central. The Tigers gave Rozema what he calls "a decent bonus" and shipped him to Clinton on the banks of the Mississippi. Overall, Rozema is 9-4 this season with an earned run average well under 2.00. He and teammate Steve Trella are among the top five hurlers in the league.

As a itarter Rozema is 7-2. An 18-year-old moving into pro baseball has to make adjustments, both in life style and playing style. "I'm out a little on my own now," the youngster said. "It's the first time I've ever moved away from home you learn to take care of yourself. But we really don't do.

anything except sleep, eat and play baseball." ON THE PLAYING field, Rozema said, the most important adjustment has been "learning to use your head." "You have to make 'em hit your pitch, make 'em hit the Nam Tol Address FORMATION ON: Fusion Transplant Info. And in the fifth, Rico Carry reached the upper deck after George Hendrick had singled, increasing Cleveland's advantage to 5-0. The Indians added another run in the ninth on Duffy's infield single and Buddy Bell's bloop triple into the rightfield corner. It took a bunt to the first base side by John Knox in the bottom of the fourth to get the Tigers their first hit off Ecker-sley. Bill Freehan also singled later that same inning, but Bon Oglivie was thrown out trying to take third on the play. IN THE FIFTH, a leadoff double by Jack Pierce proved iin vain, and in the sixth, Eck-ersley struck out Freehan to end the inning with Tigers waiting on first and third.

"Having exhausted all avenues in attempting to reconcile the problem, we are offering Cleon Jones his unconditional release," the statement said. "WE SEE nothing to be gained in going through arbitration procedures. The suspension is being lifted and Cleon will be paid in full. We feel another club will sign him and we wish him well." McDonald said the Mets had negotiated with three teams for a trade the Texas Rangers, the California Angels and an undisclosed National League team. He said two of the clubs expressed continued interest but Jones rejected the trades.

Jones, a 10-year veteran, asked for his unconditional release following the incident against Atlanta in New York in which he pinch hit, but refused to take leftfield and walked off.
