THE CHIEF FLAW in "Rancho Deluxe" is the script, and 99 percent of the time that flaw is fatal. There are such memorable lines as this one, uttered by a love-sick cowhand as he watches Miss Dallas cavort in the sunny woods: "Gosh, she's almost like Bambi." Only slightly less ridiculous is a segment in which a sweet but 0 1 young thing makes love with Bridges in such a vocal, skin-flick style that it gives the audience the giggles. The exquisite Elizabeth Ashley stares at the camera with wounded eyes as if to ask, "What am I doing here?" Charlene Dallas, a sexy Miss America type, is convincing as a' sugar-coated viper who will make her way in the world regardless of who is crushed in the process.

No one who counts love among 111 ill BY CHRISTINE BROWN Free Press Staff Writer "Rancho Deluxe" might have been the best of all rip-off movies, the movies that steal bits from other films, except for one factor: It is excruciatingly boring. Most people probably won't stick around to see the insipid takeoff on "The Sting" at the end of the film. We have come to expect' a great deal from director Frank Perry.

"David and Lisa," "Diary of a Mad Housewife" and "Play It as It Lays" were thoughtful and sensitive films. But those were made with i ex-wife, screenwriter Eleanor Perry. In "Rancho Deluxe," Frank Perry flies solo, and scriptwriter Thomas McGuane doesn't give him much of a runway. Attempts by Perry and McGuane to inject scenes with meaning land with a thud. One's heart goes out to the fine actors who surely must have signed on for this film before reading the script. Jeff Bridges and Sam Waterston are completely wasted as lovable rustlers. Scenes in which Waterston ladoff man's job is to get on base not drive in runs. "If he's a fastball pitcher, I look for that.

There's no way you can go up to the plate and wait to look for the ball and try to hit home runs." Colbert, in fact, thinks lie may strike out less with the Tigers than he did with the Padres because he's surrounded by better ballplayers. Oddly enough, Jake Wood, who was hardly what you would call a home run hitter, holds the Tiger team record for strikeouts with a whopping 141, committed in 1961. Since then, just four Tigers have struck out as often as times in any one year. Willie Horton has done it in three different seasons, and Aurelio Rodriguez, Norm Cash and McAuliffe each achieved it once. Colbert, on the other hand, has struck out more than 100 times in each of the last six seasons and that's as long as Ule's been in the big leagues.

He reached his peak in 1970 73'hen he went down swinging on 150 occasions. Not that the Padres complained. You see, Nate also slammed 38 home runs that summer.
