Minnows and spinners are best; worms are seldom if ever used. Trollers use a lead-filled pipe sinker about a foot long which is attached to the end of the line.

Leaders are attached to the line above the sinker. SOME ANGLERS like to use chugging equipment with spreaders which permit the use of two minnows a couple of feet apart. When bass are schooling near the surface, as they often do, trolling with a chugging line produces good catches. A bait casting rod rigged with a light sinker and short leader makes a good outfit. Although not fighters like the black bass, white bass are gamey, especially when taken in water which permits the use of light tackle.

When they feed on the surface, the silvers may be taken on artificial flies. Rather large flies, nui four and six, are recommended, in rather bright patterns. A split shot is used to sink the fly a foot or two beneath the VICO.Det Stewart. Wash Doerr.Bost Early.Wah Slider. fliila lotv.

But don't be too sure. Some nails may be getting rutsy. Some private owners don't believe the planks which support the public's right on trout streams are quite as stout as others think they are. Although this is a matter of road use rather than fishing rights, it all ties in with the apparent movement to close streams to public fishing. Fred. Ludwig, of Detroit, mailed an Ogemaw County map on which several trout streams were marked "closed private" by a West Branch friend. One of these streams was Houghton Creek, tributary to the Rifle River.

Ludwig also told of several streams which were fenced to prevent fishermen from wading. WE RECALL that the late P. S. Lovejoy, Michigan's sage of conservation, was never too well satisfied with the status of public rights in trout fishing, even after the Pine River decisions. "That's OK for the Pine," he used to say, "but to nail down those rights good and solid, you will have to have a court decision on every other stream in the state." The new wave of claims for privacy on trout streams seems to bear out Love-joy's prediction.

There is no sharp dividing line between "public" and "private" trout streams, even under the Pine River court decisions. One cannot blame private owners for trying to push their claims as far as they can. At the same time, Michigan trout fishermen need to be jealous of their rights, too. They cannot afford to be inched out of one stream after another until finally only the biggest liver oxt kit la tixm Cfort-dfa to. BOGDW PREPARE in A FEW WEEKS!
