On the walls are side-by-side photos of famous couples like Robert Taylor and Barbara Stanwyck. William Powell and Myrna Loy, Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn, and get this Frank Sinatra and Ava Gardner. Well, they were married once.

Dean Martin, onstage, was as charming as ever. But wouldn't it have been nice if the had bothered to learn one or two new jokes? Especially since Martin reportedly is getting more than $150,000 a week at the Grand. He held the usual glass in his hand and did the same old drinking routines. The crowd loved him, though. The- best bet at the hotel is not Margin or the roulette wheels, but comedian Jackie Gayle in the Lion's Den lounge.

Along with Shecky Green, Gayle is becoming one of the hottest stand-up comics in the field. He is making his break-through now after several years on the Las Vegas scene and he's funny. Shecky was in Gayle's opening night audience and came up to clown around with him onstage. For a hotel that just opened, the Grand was in remarkable readiness, despite a leak in the pipes that put some 40 or 50 rooms out of commission. Even the room service comes up within 20 as rapidly as in any well-established hotel.

And there are five major restaurants in the hotel, including a very popular delicatessen. Only a few of the many MGM stars invited were not able to be there: Joan Crawford, Barbara Stanwyck and Esther Williams. June Allyson showed up two days later, with her son Dick Poweirjr. Movie oldtimers would have got the shock of their lives to see Margaret O'Brien, the little-girl heroine of "Journey for Margaret," sitting at a blackjack table at 4 a.m. Margaret, 36 now, is much thinner than she was on her recent television appearance.

Jane Powell said she has already rented a townhouse in New York for her run in "Irene" after she replaces Debbie Reynolds in February. Dozens of photographers kept snapping her picture. "Would you believe," she whispered, "I really hate having my picture taken?" left at Esther Williams. That's how we found our room here at MGM's new Grand Hotel. It's more like-a city, two million square feet on 43 acres of prime Las Vegas land on th? famous Strip.

And even though MGM boss Kirk Kerkorian did not show up for Dean Martin's opening-night in the hotel's Celebrity Room an awful lot of other people did. 1 At exactly 6 p.m. on opening night, a parade of vintage cars from old MGM movies pulled up to the front door. And out stepped longtime stars Jane Powell, Howard Keel, June Havoc, Fred MacMurray, Peter Lind Hayes, Mary Healy, Margaret O'Brien, George Raft and our favorite, Cary Grant. It was just like one of your old-fashioned movie premieres, with the hundreds of screaming fans outside in the 36-degree weather to cheer the arrivals.

The biggest star was the hotel itself. The MGM Grand has 2,100 rooms, and the largest gambling casino in the world. They'd better have, to pay for this plush $196-million inn. There are 1,000 slot machines, 10 dice tables, 45 blackjack tables, three roulette wheels and two baccarat tables. There are 16 card games, and the all-important Keno lounge to sit in when your feet are aching from the long walk around the place.

Talking about turning left at Esther Williams that's really bow you get to your room. You look for the photographic blowup of the MGM star that marks your corridor. As you wind your way along the myriad corridors, there's no other way, except dropping cookie crumbs. We knew when we turned right past Edward G. Robinson, for instance, that we were headed the wrong way.
