iiiiier wins sv i lit IMIllltHitl' -i Hutch Award .4 John Hi Her, the Tiger relief pitcher who came back from i heart art to set a major league record for saves last summer, has been named the ninth annual winner of the Hutch Awri'd. Miller, who missed all of the 1971 (season and half of 1972 because of his heart attack, was credited with 38 saves in 1973, eclipsing the old record, held by Clay Carroll of the Cincinnati Reds. He also won 10 games and had an earned run average of 1.44, one of the lowest in the American League. The Hutch award goes annually to the player who best exemplifies the competitive instinct and character of Fred Hutchinson, the former Tiger pitcher and manager who died of cancer. HILI.ER'S selection was by the widest margin in the history of the award, according to Ritter Collett, sports editor of the Dayton (0.) Journal and Herald, and secretary-treasurer of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Scholarship Fund.
