And he certainly has to qualify as the leading contender for Comeback Player of the year in more ways than one. Michigan 21, Illinois 6.

Minnesota 34, Purdue 7. Northwestern 21, Indiana 20. Ohio State 35, Michigan State 0. Wisconsin 35, Iowd 7. BY JIM HAW KINS Free Press Sports Writer Joe Coleman Willie Hor-ton Dick McAuliffe they never had a chance.

But then, come to think of it, neither did Baltimore or Boston or New York or anybody else this past season when John Hiller came to the rescue. That's why the Detroit Baseball Writers have chosen Hiller their "Tiger of the Year" by an overwhelming margin as overwhelming as the success the amazing left-handed relief ace enjoyed against the rest of the American League. The only surprising thing about that decision is the fact that somehow it was not unan-imous. Twenty-three game winner Joe Coleman also got one vote. Hiller received the rest all 32 of them the most ballots ever cast for anybody in the nine-year history of the award.

Only one Tiger Mickey Lolich in 1971 was a unanimous selection. And he received only 28 votes. BY NOW, everyone knows the stirring story of Hiller's comeback struck down by a heart attack in the winter of .1971 out of the game for a season and one-half eratic at best before his attack, and absolutely afterwards. He won 10 games himself and saved a record 38 others for somebody else, accounting for a full 56 percent of the Tigers triumphs. Much of the time it looked like Billy Martin just didn't trust anyone else.

And without a doubt, the Tigers never would have finished as high as third a distant dozen games back if it hadn't been for Hiller's heroics. Those 38 saves surpassed Clay Carroll's major league standard set just one year ago. AND HIS FEATS have not gone unnoticed. The Detroit fan clubs were the first to officially jump on the bandwagon, naming Hiller "King Tiger" before the season was over. As soon as Hiller's totals were added up, The Sporting News declared him the American League's Fireman of the Year.

And the United Foundation recently brought John to Detroit from his home in Duluth, to honor him as the "Male Sportsman of the Year." Hiller finished fourth in the ballotting for the Cy Young Award, which goes annually to the top pitcher in the league. He was the only reliever in the AL to merit a mention. He is certain to receive some consideration in the voting for Most Valuable Player, State College Juniata, 52, Moravian 14. Kings College, Pa. 28, St.
