eventually extend to Phenix City saying such improvements will boost economic development and tourism in southeast Alabama Everett said a four lane highway would provide a with the Atlan ta market All successful northeast Alabama businessman and former state legislator said he hopes to draw enough sup port in upcoming presiden tial primaries par ticularly in New Hamp shire Alabama and The construction would also pull tourism business away from the interstate system he said The governor pointed out at the meeting that one of the major criteria when considering the four laning of a route is the traffic count In a letter he wrote to Wallace on Nov 14 Everett said the traffic flow bet ween Eufaula and Phenix City greater than the travel counts on several ex isting four laned roads in the state including some portions of the interstate By combining the 1981 traffic counts for US 431 and Alabama Hwy 165 which run parallel courses from Eufaula to Phenix Ci ty Everett showed that 7240 vehicles use the routes every day More than three fifths of those vehicles traveled on US 431 He said the daily traffic count on 1 59 in Dekalb County is 5710 vehicles while 1 65 in Escambia County has 5760 US 82 in Tuscaloosa County is 3500 Meetings on the four laning have been held for at least the last three years One of the largest meetings was held in August of 1982 at Lakepoint Lodge near Eufaula Georgia to be considered for vice president He said the No 2 spot is the one he has really had in mind since announcing his candidacy almost a year ago and traveling to Iowa New Hampshire and other states trying to get his cam paign off the ground have the political experience necessary to become Willis told The Anniston Star in an interview Wednesday would like to have some ex perience DOTHAN EAGLE riday Dec 30 1983 Newton inally Approves Liquor License By KAY KIRKLAND Eagle Staff Writer NEWTON A much discussed liquor license re quest made in October was approved during a special meeting of the Newton City Council Thursday night The special meeting was called by councilmen John Hutto and Elgin Walker who said they believe the issues concerning Rose request for a liquor license needed to be resolv ed as quickly as possible The request has been a topic of dicussion at council meetings since October when Miss Clark asked for the license to open Paragon on Spr ing Street At a Tuesday night meeting set to allow local residence to voice opinions about the lounge opening no objections were raised A motion to accept a zoning board recommendation making approval of the license possible however died without a second The zoning board which met in late November to consider the change sug gested a temporary variance changing a por tion of Spring Street from residential to business Council member Mary Car michael told the council that the town attorneys ad vised against a variance or dinance and Gerald motion for a variance died Council members said action on the liquor license was consequently impossible Hutto said Thursday that he suggested Ms Clark go before the zoning board seeking a permanant zon ing change for the portion of Spring Street where her business will be located Hutto and Mayor reddy Harden said the zoning issue was the pro in the council discussion about the license request Both said the coun cil could not deny the license on the basis of ob jections because no one made a public outcry against the re zoning or the license A specially called zoning board meeting was con ducted at Miss urg ing Thursday night preceding the council's 15
