Well, remember last week when Ted Garvin blasted the Red Wings after their NHL opener in New York? He ripped the entire team and then singled out four or five players who Garvin claimed weren't putting out enough effort. Now, four days and two more losses later, Garvin has changed his tune.

"I'm not made at any of the players," he said Monday following the Wings' 90-minute workout a Olympia in preparation for Tuesday night's home game against the also-win-less St. Louis Blues. "I was mad at them last week. But they weren't playing as well as they should have been. Now they're giving a good effort.

It's just that the breaks are going against us. I've told them that. They understand." WHAT THE WINGS have accomplished since Garvin's tirade last week is a mystery. They were mauled, 9-4, by the Boston Bruins Saturday. And the Bruins had a 5-0 lead before the Wings got on the scoreboard.

They were manhandled and tormented by the Philadelphia Flyers Sunday. And the Wings blew a 2-0 lead in that one while losing, 5-2. Nevertheless, Garvin sen some encouragement that the Wings will post their fist victory of the season before too long. "There's good spirit on the team and they're skating good," he said. "I can see things coming." Garvin admits his criticism of those "four National Football League National Conference CENTRAL DIVISION PF PA Minnesota 5 0 0 97 54 Green Bay 2 1 2 65 53 DETROIT 1 3 1 78 86 Chicago 1 4 0 85 123 EASTERN DIVISION American Conference CENTRAL DIVISION PF PA Pittsburgh 4 1 0 138 63 Cleveland 3 2 0 68 84 Cincinnati 3 2 0 83 75 Houston 0 5 0 77 173 EASTERN DIVISION PF PA Buffalo 4 1 0 105 93 Miami 4 1 0 120 60 NY Jets 2 3 0 60 80 New England 1 4 0 74 110 Baltimore 1 4 0 67 123 WESTERN DIVISION PF PA Kansas City 3 1 1 65 57 Oakland 3 2 0 75 74 Denver 2 3 0 138 113 San Diego 1 4 0 85 130 PF PA 4 1 0 128 51 0 143 81 0 112 133 1 84 86 1 106 136 DIVISION PF PA 5 0 0 162 90 2 3 0 95 121 2 3 0 123 88 2 3 0 61 145 Washington Dallas St.

0 LOHllllg or five players" has aroused the anger of a couple of the Wings' players. "1 just don't want to get these guys all uptight right now," he said. "They're starting to come around." After Nick Libett and Mickey Redmond each scored early in the first period, it looked, indeed, like the Wings might be coming around. BUT THEY GAVE UP a goal to Philadelphia before the period ended. And then in the second period, they gave up the first of two embarrassing shorthanded goals and the Flyers merely kept hitting and scoring to wrap up their third straight victory.

"We looked pretty good until the Flyers scored their first goal," Garvin noted. "Then those shorthanded goals. Can you believe it?" The Flyers' first shorthanded goal tied the score at 2-2 and put the Wings in a tailspin. And the second one was the result of a bad bounce of the puck, according to Garvin. "Those shorthanded goals were accidents," Ted said.

"They could have happened to anyone." It will be a while before Garvin puts th finger on one of his players again. ICE CHIPS: Right wing Tim Eccleston will rejoin the Wings for Tuesday's St. Lcuis game, which begins a three-game home stand. Ecclestone missed the Wings' pair of weekend games with a case of the flu. Defenseman Ron Stackhouse (knee sprain) and left winger Tord Lundstrom (shoulder separation) will remain out of the lineup for at least another week.

GALLAGHER AND BROWN have both performed up to pre-season expectations and the Wolverines are getting as much or more than they could have expected from the rest of the team. Junior linebacker Steve Strinko, for example, is living up to his responsibilities with a total of 64 tackles, including 40 solos and fiv tackles for a loss. "He's done a marvelous said Bo, who had worried over Strinko's weight before the season started. "He did a good job at Lansing (against MSU). He was our defensive champion for the second time this season.

He's trimmed down a little to about 235 and he's having a good year. He's playing now like everybody predicted he would when he came out of high school." In addition, the Wolverines are getting help from Carl Russ at wide-side linebacker (40 tackles), from little Tim Davis and Don Warner at middle guard (66 tackles between them) and from Don Coleman and Walt Williamson at the ends. Sophomore wolfman Don Dufek is third in tackles to beef up the already-strong defensive secondary led by Brown and Barry Dot-zauer, who have two interceptions apiece. THIS YEAR'S TEAM still has a big task ahead if it is to live up to the standards of Schembechler's first four teams. The 1969 team gave up 148 piints and every year since then the total has been going down.

The 1970 team allowed 90 points, the 1971 team was touched for 83 (including the Rose Bowl). And last year's group cut it to 57 points in 11 games, which may be tough to top this year. It looked like they would finally get a chance to score some touchdowns on the Michigan Wolverines, who have led the nation in defense against scoring for the last two years. After all, assistant coach Jim Young Bo Schembechler's brilliant defensive coordinator had gone his own way to a head coaching job at Arizona. And the Wolverines were suddenly a no-name defense no names like Randy Logan and Tom Darden In the backfield, no Henry Hill-types at middle guard, no Marry Huff or Mike Taylor at linebacker, as there always were In the first tour years of Schembechler's reign.

Tackle Dave Gallagher was a pre-season All-American choice and safety Dave Brown got some attention, too. But there were Wolverine watchers who figured for U-M to be scored upon. Gary Moeller stepped up to the defensive coordinator job, however, and now both he and his no-name defenders are making names for themselves in typical U-M style, with three straight shutouts. THIS YEAR'S MICHIGAN defense Isn't averaging the 6.9 points per-game yield (including the Rose Bowl loss) of the 1971 national leaders or the 5.2 of last year's outfit. This year's unit, going for an unprecedented third straight defensive tite, has allowed five opponents a total of 17 points, or an average of 3.4 points per game.

And the defense isn't even responsible for seven or those 17 points. Iowa's only touchdown came on an intercepted pass. "I think we've improving," Scbrnlechler noted modestly Monday, as he sti his sights on Saturday's meeting with Wisconsin. "We were hurt, too, early in the season witJh our most experienced linebacker, Craig Mutch, and tackle Jeff Perlinger out. "They're back playing again and now we've developed a little bit of depth." Like most of the Bears, Butkus was tight-lipped after the Bears' second successive National Football League setback by an underdog. The pre-vious week, New Orleans' Saints upset the Bears, 21-16. "I'll have something to say later in the week," said Butkus, whose retirement because of an ailing knee was rumored earlier in the season.

Butkus limped off the field Sunday two plays after rookie tackle Wally Chambers of the Bears left with a strained knee. Folowing Butkus' exit, the Falcons scored three touchdowns in four minutes. Cotih Abe Gibron said Butkus reinjured a groin muscle he hurt last week. Dr. Theodore A.
