It's the rare young family that rents anymore, and almost without exception even they, will have the plans of a new home stashed away in the kitchen drawer, be pored over lovingly at night after the dishes are done and the kids in the sack. To be sure, the automobile is still the No. 1 prized possession, and the average American persists in the quaint custom of thinking long and hard before investing $12,000 in a home that will last a lifetime but will go out and buy a $3,000 car on the spur of the moment knowing that in five years it won't be worth anyone's but Max Cohen's time.

This propensity for free-wheeling is indeed responsible for the boom which started after World War II and is still riding the crest. Car-starved after the five that the auto industry turned out nothing but war material, Americans plunged into an orgy of buying that was unforeseen and unprecedented, and changed law of economics that called for a recession after the defense cutbacks. They bought not only cars, but every. thing else, including homes. They are still buying, but there are tiny cracks in the economic wall which are causing considerable concern.

If you hadn't noticed it around the house, it 1s fact that money is getting tight, not because there is less of it around but principally because so much of it is committed. Payments on the car, the house, the automatic washer, the television and the obstetrician are taking a big bite out of the Friday take-home. Other spending habits are shifting too. Americans are spending large sums on the big summer vacation, but they have cut down their Saturday nights on the town and other forms of entertainment. They are eating well, but they lean heavily toward potato chips in front of the television and hamburg instead of steak in the kitchen.

We never had it so good, but the cracks are widen. ing, caused by inflation. Nearly every month the cost of living goes up, squeezing tighter the available cash in the family pocketbook after the payments are met. If the trend continues, it is easy to foresee what will have to give budget. The installment side of the chequer will have to be cut down.

Payments on the home, of course, will continue for many more years -there is no cutting there, and Americans will certainly give up this solid measure of security last if they are backed to the wall. They can taper off on washers, even television, though probably not the obstetrician, but it remains to be seen they will forego their first and seemingly abiding love--the new model car. If they do, the family budget can be easily balanced. but. As we said before, American prosperity is based on the automobile industry; if it sags the boom will go bust and rough times will lie ahead for everyone.

No one has yet been able to predict whether this will happen, but there are indications that the full story will be revealed next fall and winter when the new cars, said to be greatly changed from current ones, go on the If Americans rush to the display floors and begin to buy, it will be a hopeful sign that despite all the ily budgetary problems, things are being worked out. Short By Jack Beahan It's Now GOP Official Policy to Knock 'ic' from Democratic Party Washington (UP) The publican Party has launched as "official policy" a campaign to change the name of the Democratic Party, a spokesman disclosed today.

L. Richard Guylay, director of public relations at the Republican National Committee, told the United Press it "will be a matter of policy" for Republicans to refer to the opposition as the "Democrat Party." The GOP convention in San Francisco last week was the first fullscale try-out of the new policy. It omitted the word "Democratic" from all party utterances. Guylay said the GOP feels that "Democratic as an adjective is not descriptive of the party as it exists today." He said Republicans feel that the party of the Democrats should be "more properly" called the "Democrat Party" because of the "diverse view. points" within it.

Guylay was one of those responsible for editing Republican Merry Go Round (Continued from Page 4) during the exciting second ballot. "I have lost," said Jack Kennedy at the Stock Yards Inn. His police cordon faded away. He made his way to the platform without the police. "I hope you'll make it unanimous," he said, speaking into the microphone.

Then he stepped away. "Go back and make a motion," Sam Rayburn whispered. "Make a motion." Kennedy returned and made the motion, unanimously nominating Kefauver. Pulling back out of the limelight, his emotions finally got the better of him. The young Senator slipped away.

Sam Rayburn asked for a unanimous vote. Only Virginia voted "no." Jack Kennedy, now only 39 years old, hag many years ahead of him. He can afford to wait. The votes he got from the south served to break down the bugaboo of religious prejudice. Some Democrats felt that Catholic delegates bloc-voted for Kennedy.

But while Irish members of the California delegation did present a vigorous united front, another Catholic, Mike Di Salle, of Italian descent, nominated Kefauver and swung the entire Ohio delegation to him. Maybe he remembered that Kennedy knifed Italian- American Foster Furcolo for the Senate. After It was all over that night, Stevenson threw a big party. All the Democratic bigwigs were there. Suddenly someone looked around and noticed that the new vice presidential nominee had not been invited.

An emissary was sent to Kefauver's room in the Blackstone. Estes and Nancy were sitting with their shoes off. They were too tired to come. Hal Boyle (Continued from Page 4) Jacques Chambrun, an agent who has writers like Somerset Maugham in his stable but likes also to discover new talent. He told her send along her manuscript and a few days later she was surprised to receive his flat reply: "I'll sell it." After a staid Philadelphia publisher (and an equally staid one in Boston) returned the novel at tong's length, it was quickly accepted by a Manhattan firm.

Columbia Pictures is considering making it into a film, and has already taken an option, sight unseen, on Mrs. Metalious' next novel. She has already received 100 in royalties. Summoned to New York, she didn't have anything suitable to wear, so she sent her 12-yearold daughter to the store with $14 to buy her a new dress. She arrived here, her brown hair in a pony tail held together by a blue rubber band, a bit defiant about the impact of her novel back home.

"'Three people already have cut me dead on the street, and the book isn't even out yet," she said. "And I'm afraid the school board won't want to keep as principal a man married to a woman who wrote about the things I did. "It's all right to gossip about what goes on in a small town, but you're not supposed to bring It out into the open. They don't like to see the truth in print. But George tells me not to worry he can always get another job." The couple have no intention of leaving Gilmanton, They are moving out of the house they rented for $25 a month and into a new home of their own.

"Why, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else," Mrs. Metalious said. "In a small town there is time for everything "No matter what crime you commit you can always go on living in a small town, that is, unless you are caught stealing. "A parent in a small New England town would rather it be known his teen-age daughter was having an illicit romance than that she had been caught taking a nickel candy bar from a store." is working like a posion ivy attack on the Democrats, Guylay said with a chuckle "what's happened to the that is the speeches at San Francisco to see that no "ic" got through the teleprompter. In press copies of Thomas E.

Dewey's speech there were two blank spaces after each "Democrat" where industrious staffers had smudged out the "ic." Guylay claims the origin of the shortened name is "obscure." But simmering Democrats recall De most vividly that it was used repeatedly by Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy (R-Wis) during the ArmyMcCarthy feud hearings. Other Republicans adopted it and now the committee has made it official. With most Democratic bigwigs out of town or campaignling with Adlai E.

Stevenson, the only Democratic National Committee comment immediately available was outraged mutters from secretaries and the like. Most of these embraced wholeheartedly suggestions in "letters to the editor' columns here calling for a countermove to shortGOP name to "Publican Party" or "Republicrat In the Bible the word publicans is usually followed by "and sinners." Guylay noted such suggestions but said: "It doesn't seem to click like ours." Well aware that the strategem, YSOX THEATRE IN wysax. TONITE THURS.
