In the history of the World Series only five teams have rebounded from 1 3 deficits to win the crown The last to do it was the 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates who rallied to edge the Orioles A crowd of 66947 the largest to watch a World Series game since 1964 when 67101 were at Yankee Stadium to see St Louis and New York could not have been more disappointed as they watched Cy Young candidate John Denny go down to defeat The crowd included his father Dick Denny 70 who traveled 10000 miles from Australia for the game Denny who won Game One and was starting Saturday on three rest gave up two run single in the fourth then left the game with one out one run in and the bases loaded in the sixth Storm Davis' at 21 the youngest player in the American League before the September recalls gave up a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth before leaving for a pinch hit ter in the sixth when the Orioles used a Series record four consecutive pinch hitters That left it to the Baltimore bullpen which did not give up a run in 20 inn ings in postseason competition before pinch hitter Ozzie Virgil singled in pinch runner Bob Dernier with two outs in the ninth against Tippy Mar tinez Virgil was the eighth pinch hitter in the game a Series record Sammy Stewart limited the Phillies to one hit over 2 1 3 innings and Tippy Martinez finished up with 1 2 3 innings of three hit relief After giving up Game Three but he was a driving force with two hits and one run batted in Saturday as bats finally came alive too Both the Orioles and the Phillies wound up with 10 hits the most by either team in this Series as this World Series finally belonged to the hitters Baltimore took a 2 0 lead in the fourth as Dauer broke out of a for 12 Series slump The designated hitter Ken Singleton had dubbed his 6 7 8 hitters Dauer Todd Cruz and Rick Dempsey the Three Stooges a kidding reference to their inability to do anything right at the plate They could do the job in the field especially Dauer at second and Dempsey behind the plate but they all had off years offensively Dauer hitting 235 Dempsey 231 and Cruz199 That changed quickly Consecutive singles with none out in the fourth by Jim Dwyer Cal Denny But redemption was spoiled when the Orioles came back in the sixth A Gets Scare Against Tech By PHIL PARAMORE Eagle Sports Writer ATLANTA All the ingredients for a gigantic upset were present All but the final score The Auburn Tigers overcame a lackluster first half defense performance and held Georgia Tech to only five first downs in the second half to claim a tough win at Grant ield Saturday Randy Campbell scored on a 2 yard run midway through the third period and L5o Jackson and Chris Wood gained fourth quarter scores to sew up the victory for the Tigers But the final score was no where near in dicitive of the scare that Georgia Tech put into Auburn In fact had it not been for a half time jawing session by Tiger coach Pat Dye Tech would have done a lot more than scare Auburn in front of the 55000 who looked on Georgia Tech practically owned Auburn the entire first half Tech ran at will on the much publicized front wall The Yellow Jackets pilled up 237 yards total offense and kept the ball for 11 minutes longer than Auburn Only after Tech got into scor ing position did the defense finally begin to come alive Georgia Tech had visions of an upset from the beginning After a short kickoff return gave the Jackets the ball on their own 13 to start the first period quarter back John Dewberry began moving his team Robert Lavette ran three times for 21 yards to the Auburn 40
